Bill: Selective Service Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Federalist Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2262
Description[?]:
Right now, the government of Hobrazia is prohibited from requiring any typw of military service from its citizens. While we do not support rquiring all citizens to serve in the military upon finishing school, we do believe that the government should reserve the right to call upon its citizens to serve in times of war. We do not restrict ourselves in other areas of our military; why must we be so austere on this subject? NOTE: If anyone were to be called up in a draft, they would undergo basic training just like any other soldier. We would NOT be throwing untrained individuals into the fray. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change National service.
Old value:: There shall be no mandatory military or civilian national service.
Current: All adults upon completion of schooling must serve either a term in the military or a lesser paid term of civilian national service, at their option.
Proposed: All adults upon completion of schooling can be required in times of war to serve a term in the military.

Message | Normally, I would vehemently oppose. However, under the current circumstances (id est, eminent conflict with Likatonia) we may consider. |
Date | 18:49:13, July 28, 2006 CET | From | Social Democratic Liberal Party | To | Debating the Selective Service Act |
Message | We oppose. Even taking into consideration current events, we maintain that a fully professional and voluntary army will do a better job than one largely comprising conscripts. Manpower is not everything, and untrained troops will reduce effectiveness in complex interventions and peacekeeping missions. |

Message | Who is to say that the troops we use have to be untrained? In addition, it is not required that the government use this option, even in times of war. |

Message | Your proposal is that any adult who has completed schooling can be called up to the military. How many of these people are going to have received military training? If you seek a potential reserve of military trained adults, you should propose a compulsory period of military service. Whilst you are correct that the government does not have to use this option, the fact is that they could. We find this unacceptable. |
Date | 19:21:35, July 29, 2006 CET | From | Federalist Party | To | Debating the Selective Service Act |
Message | If a citizen is called up for the draft, then they must undergo basic training like any normal soldier who is enlisted. There is no difference in the type of training that they receive. |
