Description[?]:
Farming is a fickle industry, in a good year it can greatly reward it's practitioners. In a poor year, it can leave them close to despair. What is more, the line between what is a good year and what is a poor year can be very thin, and what is a poor year for some might see conditions elsewhere that produce a bumper crop and profit. In such a fickle industry any attempt to apply a one size fits all solution across the whole country is bound to be inequitable, and accordingly the Social Devolutionists propose that Agricultural decisions, in so far as they relate to Farm Subsidies be the responsibility of Local Governments. Further, our current legislation provides for no regulation of the use of pesticides, other than requiring their use to be declared. Whilst I am pleased to note that most Vanukun farmers appear to be using pesticides, sparingly, and appropriately, There also appear to be a number of cases where innapproriate products are used, or an over abundance of such products are used, or they are used at the wrong time in the growing cycle to be effective. My department is of course looking into these individual cases, but it remains worrying that the legislation as it stands continues to allow the potential fos such misuse. In the case of the vast majority of Agricultural Pesticides there is ample data as to which are safe, or at least safer, there is ample data as to which are most effective within that 'safer' range, and there is ample data as to the best way to administer those chemicals found to be in the 'effective' and 'safe' band. By regulating the use of chemicals, fungicides and pesticides, we arm our farmers with the tools to maximise their crops and their profits if they so choose. without risking the health of our nation or the the environment.
