Message | It is an effective deterrent to repeat offenses; there are certain crimes so henious that the convict has no further dignity, the dignity of the state is robbed more by allowing such criminals to remain alive and supported by teh taxpayers of the state, and we respect the abilities of our juries to determine if there is any reasoable doubt before passing death upon anyone. |

Message | Studies all around the world have shown that the punishment for a crime is not the deterrent, a criminal invariably believes that he or she will not be caught therefore the punishment is irrelevant, the most effective deterrent is to raise the conviction rate, which would mean additional police. Also, who are you to decide what crimes warrant the taking of life? Yes, perhaps the criminal in question has done so but are we no better than them? And as for juries deciding reasonable doubt...there are hundreds of examples of being who were convicted of a crime and then being found innocent. If they are imprisoned they can be released and compensated, if they are dead, there is little that can be done. |

Message | This issue always proves contentious. Within our party, both sides have been argued passionately, and with great eloquence. Ultimately, the key factors were: 1. Does the existence of a death penalty provide a deterrant? 2. How many innocent lives are likely to be lost through wrongful conviction? 3. Is, therefore, the deterrant provided by a death penalty going to incrase the overall safety of the majority? Our party commisioned research that suggested that those who commit capital crimes are less likely to re-offend than those who commit lesser crimes, however there is still a 35% liklihood of further offences. This means that the only other option is imprisonment for life. Our research also suggested that the cost of life imprisonment, based on current prison figures, if put into healthcare, could save tens, maybe hundreds of lives per annum. It has been shown that the number of innocents killed would not outweigh this, so we must support the current legislation. We would, however recomend a regular review. |
