| Message | This is a topic that I find rather interesting so I'll comment both in and out of character to make the same point: OOC: This last summer I had argued for hours with a director of a large children organization over this topic exactly. I was astonished to think someone who has devoted his life's work towards helping children in need would have such a seemingly insane idea as to abolish child labor laws in America. It turned out that his reasoning was far less insane. He argued that in today's culture we have essentially devalued children in society. In the past parents had large families in order to work the family farm or to otherwise provide for the entire family as a whole. This taught so many of the work ethic and determination that has deminished since then. Yes, there were terrible abuses... just as there were for adult workers in days passed. These stains in the moral fabric of American business have since been fixed though Unions and Workers Rights... these rights are for ALL workers which would include those children who would be allowed into the workplace. In fact, by socially devaluing our children we have seeded the abuses within the family and the overall decline of the family structure. ICC: Saridan protects ALL workers from the abuse and exploitation by their employers. Children are no different. This law as it stands protects the sanctity of the value of our children without our society. |
