Bill: Reform Copyrights
Details
Submitted by[?]: Leviathan Party
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2322
Description[?]:
The private hoarding of copyrights gives effective monopoly to large businesses able to develop or buy patents and the rights to information. This bill will reduce patents to two years, after which they will enter into the national commons. This bill will also eliminate all software patents, which software developers have consistently opposed because they slow innovation and favor monolithic corporations. |

Message | Is this providing two yrs of copyright protection, or some other limits on copyrights? We can support this measure if we interpet it correctly. Within two yrs most all works will achieve their highest percenatage of sales, thus releasing them into the commons will only encourage more work and creativity. |

Message | You are correct that we are proposing two years of full protection, after which time the copyright expires and the work enters into the public domain. We add that, should this pass, we will propose the establishment of the national commons, which will allow free use of the previously copyrighted material my Malivians, but still enforce intellectual property rights against businesses and individuals in other nations. This will allow Malivians to benefit from Malivian work, while not eliminating our national competiveness with foreign firms. |

Message | A very sensible proposal indeed. |
