Message | We have a problem with "are never made". This means the government is actually forbidding any parent or school to demand the child sings the national anthem, thereby involving itself in raising and educating children. That is a very dangerous way to handle things. Things are clear to the Olive Greens: parents are responsible for children, to educate them and to instruct where the child will attend school. If they choose a school where singing or paying respect to the national anthem is obliged, this is obviously their personal choice. |

Message | I am curious as to whether private schools could still force kids to sing the national anthem under this bill. |

Message | Teaching means to convince kids to do things not forcing them to sing for instance. DSP: Yes, this piece of legislation applies to private schools as well. UTP: we are willing to draft a supplement. What would you like to add ? Note: The MDU will bring this proposal to the floor after the next election. |

Message | we would like to keep the law the way it is, or to look into other options such as not having it mandatory to play the anthem at the beginning of the school day and to make it purely optional to stand/sing/show respect when it is, in fact, played at any event... |

Message | Is the POR willing to support this piece of legislation if we add a supplement to this proposal : 'children have to show respect when the national anthem is played'. |

Message | We would support when this amendment is included: "Children are never made to sing the national anthem. (end of formal policy) -- addendum to be included in the description: "Schools may choose to play the national anthem, and children are asked to show respect when they do." --" |

Random fact: By default the head of government is the ultimate authority within a national government. In general terms, heads of government are expected to consult with cabinet colleagues (including those from other parties) before making significant decisions but they remain responsible for government action. |
