Bill: Comprehensive Tax Reform of 2350
Details
Submitted by[?]: Catholic Workers Union
Status[?]: passed
Votes: This bill proposes to change income taxes. It requires more than half of the legislature to vote yes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: November 2355
Description[?]:
A modern age demands an increase in national revenue. We can not expect to offer so many amazing programs to our people without recieving an adequate source of revenue. This proposal is a compromise. While income taxes increase dramatically, we hope that increases in the minimum wage and increased welfare benefits will offset any negative effects to lower-income families. We will also maintain our current policy of not taxing essential goods. However, luxury taxes must be increased steadily to offset losses in other areas. Luxury taxes are fair taxes, because they ask citizens to contribute a substantial portion of their non-essential spending to the common good, encouraging community. Corporation taxes must be cut slightly for two reasons. Increases in the minimum wage will need to be done without significant price increases. Also, corporate taxes are relatively ineffective, bringing us only a small amount of revenue. Church taxes should also be omitted from this new tax proposal, since they penalize a center of community and blur the separation of church and state, subjugating the first to the second. |

Message | Reasons? What's wrong with raising revenue, especially when we're constantly increasing benefits for our people? |

Message | If we want to increase revenue, increase corporation taxes and tax the churches. If the people want welfare then the fat cats are just gonna have to do without their mansions and private yachts. |

Message | Well... I'd prefer to tax corporations more and luxuries either the same level or a little less - so basically the opposite of what you're saying. And the income taxes are absurdly high. |

Message | The income taxes aren't high at all. 18,000 TPB is the maximum wage anyone in this country is making! Sad but true. Most Telamonites make around 4-6,000 TPB a year, and their average tax rate is a paltry 15%! That's an amazing deal for the middle class. Then consider that with this extra money we'll be able to make new investments in the economy which will spur growth (via Keynesian economics) that will benefit the wealthy the most, raising that maximum wage for the first time in years. The luxury tax taxes those goods which no one needs anyway, and helps us to feed those who need basic goods. Removing taxes from churches is essential to building a grassroots, community based movement towards solidarity and charity. I can't understand why the PSF opposes that. |

Message | Oh, well I misunderstood the average income. But I would still oppose such a large tax increase on our lower class. |

Message | We are a secular party, as long as citizens are paying taxes religious organisations should too. Just because an organisation is religious in nature doesn't mean it gets any special rights that make it exempt from tax. The law should have no exeptions, it defeats the whole point of equality. |

Message | If I removed that would you vote for it? I think both Labour and the Centrists will go for it, so we only need you. Could you stomach the corporate tax cuts for the sake of compromise (keeping in mind that businesses are run by democratic workers' councils, and tax cuts directly benefit these agencies). |
