MessageA negative proposal with no scientific basis. This is bad for the environment, bad for the economy and bad for the country. Can you say Luddite?

MessageYou know, the Luddites have received a very bad press. It's not entirely fair. If they wanted to slow "progress" to a more human scale, and humanize it, and protect their lives and livelihood, were they necessarily all wrong? They were exercsing a very human and humanist impulse. That's not all bad. Thye modern world could use a little more luddism and a little less worship of science.

However, caution on GM foods is merely prudence, not luddism.

MessageWe are concerned to hear the pro luddidte attitude being claimed by our minister for science and technology! The luddites wanted to retain an old and ineffective way of life. They were resisting change and were pro feudal society structure. Please do not say that the CCF prefers to have a liebge lord to a democratic government. It may have been a simpler, clearer life, one in which the peasant did not have to think so much, one in which manual labour was the basic coin of the realm rather than innovation or intellectual activity, but this does not make it better.

Caution on GM foods would mean refusing to eat anything that is cultivated. If you wish to return to a hunter-gatherer life style we wish you luck, but we prefer the refinements of at least having an agricultural society.
