Description[?]:
The Freedom Party, formed in January 2653 (initially as the Countryside Party, and from June as the Freedom Party), exists as a grouping of farmers, middle class capitalists, hunting enthusiasts and Protestants worried by the advance of Catholicism in Telamon. The Freedom Party is currently busy establishing itself as a voice for the free market within Telamon. /Policies/ The Freedom Party primarily advocates a laissez faire attitude towards governance, and believes that the state should be restrained as far as is possible from intervening in the lives of Telamese citizens. Thus the FP advocates little more than a minor regulatory approach to business, and desires to see most industry in the hands of private citizens, rather than as a drain upon the taxpayer. In Health and Education the FP accepts that state provision is necessary, but maintains that private health and education is better and thus should be deregulated in order to ensure that it is as available to as many citizens as possible. In defence and foreign policy the FP favours taking an isolationist and neutral position, so as to prevent Telamon getting entangled in wars that do not concern its own security. With regards to social and moral issues, the FP remains cautiously conservative, but favours an approach whereby citizens are free to do as they wish, so long as it doesn’t cause adverse effects upon others. The FP opposes a state religion, and opposes the role of the Catholic Church in politics. However it believes that religious schooling should be encouraged, so as to widen the choice of parents with regards to schooling, and to ensure that a strong Christian culture is preserved in Telamon. The FP prides itself on its appeal to rural citizens, particularly farmers, fishermen, and those who hunt. Many FP supporters are keen huntsmen, and the FP seeks to preserve hunting traditions, particularly with regards to fox hunting. /Leadership/ With the formation of the FP in January 2653, Iain Jacobs was selected as acting leader of the party, and in December 2653 he was officially elected Leader after a ballot of party members. As the FP do not intend to run a candidate in Head of State elections, except in exceptional circumstances, the leader of the FP will lead the FP caucus in the national legislature. /Support Base/ The FP contested the general election in August 2653, however it only ran a handful of candidates, with a minor campaign budget, and thus only accrued a few votes. /Governments/ The FP has currently not formed part of any government. |
