Description[?]:
The Jakania Union Party supports devolution of much domestic policy to the local level, while advocating a Jakania First policy in matters of foreign affairs. History of the party: June 2237 - The Jakania Union Party is founded as a result of a meeting at the Town and Country Pub in Dareeto, Bogendo. The activists were prominent in local federalist and nationalist circles. In respect to the somewhat divided nature of the party - nationalists in favor of greater isolation and federalists in favor of a small central government - Jack Carr, known for his pro-federal views, is elected leader of the party with John Burr, an ardant nationalist, named chairman of the party. March 2240 - A handful of federalists and nationalists run for National Assembly under the Jakania Union Party banner. While their numbers are small, JUP candidates stand in all 5 regions, finishing a credible 4th in Bogendo and garnering nearly 6,000 votes in Nilaka, more than one-third of the party's total votes for National Assembly. The party chose not to run a presidential candidate, but gave its endorsement to the Jakania Reform Party. However, the election resulted in the Jakania Republicans winning both the presidency and a majority of National Assembly seats. March 2244 - The Jakania Union Party enters the National Assembly for the first time, winning 46 seats across all 5 regions of the nation. The party shocks political observers by actually finishing first in Borenu, Bogendo and Sonhata. However, the excitement of the party's 2240 performance in Nilaka is dashed as the JUP finishes a distant 5th, revealing a party strong in certain regions of Jakania, but not all of them. Many political observers blame the party's staunch federalist position for its poor showing in the nation's capital region. The party also finishes a disappointing 5th in Hufata as Citizens for a Progressive Jakania emerges as the decided choice of anti-conservative voters there. Nilaka is the only region where the conservative vote holds strong as the CPJ finishes 4th, ahead of the JUP. However, the JUP's performance shows it to be the choice of voters in the west and northeast of the nation. May 2248 - The Union Party suffers at the polls, losing 11 seats. A simmering tension between the federalist and nationalist factions threatens to split the party, but it holds together after being invited to join a coalition government with Citizens for a Progressive Jakania. The party enters the government for the first time, taking the portfolios of Defense, Internal Affairs, Justice and Trade and Industry. April 2252 - The JUP scores a stunning breakthrough by winning the presidency, defeating the more liberal Citizens for a Progressive Jakania in both rounds of voting. It represents a dramatic break in Jakanian politics, as none of the three conservative parties reach the second round nor do the Republicans win the presidency for the first time in decades. The JUP retakes the regions of Borenu, Sonhata and Bogendo to re-establish its pre-eminence in the west and northeast en route to winning 62 National Assembly seats, nearly doubling its total and becoming the largest party in the Assembly. May 2253: A proposed coalition of the JUP, Reform and Conservative Freedom Party fails, while the CPJ stunningly collapses and its representatives leave the National Assembly. Faced with a difficult governing situation, the JUP puts forth a motion for early elections. May 2253: The JUP's proposal for early elections is defeated, but the stunning collapse of the Citizens for a Progressive Jakania leads to the mass resignation of all its National Assembly members. A JUP-Reform coalition is put together which makes up a majority of the remaining Assembly representatives and is approved in October 2253. March 2256 - Following a lethargic performance by the coalition, the JUP loses the presidency on the second round of balloting. However, the party picks up 25 seats in the National Assembly, winning every region except Nilaka, to remain the largest party with 87 representatives in the Assembly. The JUP elects to continue its coalition government with the Reform Party. |
