The party was founded as a more conservative offshoot of the National Liberal Party, which had recently dissolved. The PNP is in some ways progressive but also values traditions and believes that they should be preserved because they are important to a nation's identity and culture. Many members of the defunct PNL have now joined the PNP, this has caused the rise of more liberal and progressive factions in the party.
