"Through tradition, our people prosper." The National Orthodox Front emerged as a political resistance movement during the early days of Charles Merovici's infamous reign as king of Lourenne. Initially, the NOF worked to protect Catholic priests targeted for arrest or assassination, but by 2428, it had become Lourenne's leading voice for right-wing dissent against the Merovici regime. Though far smaller than the major leftist resistance groups, the NOF had a dedicated following and a well-financed organization due to the silent support of affluent Mixtec and Zapotec conservatives in Haboves. During the Democratic Revolution of 2437, the NOF endorsed calls for democratic elections in the wake of Merovici's assassination, and subsequently worked to pacify key generals within the Republican Army. In July 2437, the National Orthodox Front was established as an official party of the Free Republic of Lourenne. In a published platform distributed prior to the 2438 elections, the NOF laid out the following goals: 1) The creation of a unified national identity under a strong, centralized government. 2) The institution of traditional Catholic values. 3) The development of a judiciously regulated free market. 4) The establishment of basic aid programs for the elderly and working poor. 5) The preservation of a large and well-funded military. 6) The adoption of an anti-globalist stance on foreign relations and trade. The elections of 2438 dealt a stinging disappointment to the NOF, as they captured only 12% of the seats in parliament. However, Party Chairman Luc Pasqua attributed this underwhelming showing to "idealistic post-revolutionary fervor." "The radicalism of today will subside in time." Pasqua said to reporters after the election. "We believe the people will turn to the National Orthodox Front when they realize it is possible to have reform without abandoning our people's core values." In 2439, the NOF withdrew from the Redemption Party's proposed unity government in protest of parliament's rejection of a human cloning ban. Since then, the party has embraced its role as the main opposition voice in parliament. However, at a recent party rally, NOF Senator Eric Betancourt insisted that the party would eventually come to hold a majority. "We have overcome greater challenges than this," he professed to a crowd of cheering supporters, "and as we long ago learned, the road to victory will be forged by the truth of our convictions." |
