Description[?]:
Large sections of Dranish society are concerned with the state of our country's politics. The vibrant participatory democracy and the commitment to good policy instead of ideological warfare, which characterised Dranish politics of years past, have evaporated. The rightward shift of the political establishment has meant the marginalisation of all those who espouse more moderate and, we believe, humane ideologies. Equally troubling, for many, is the fact that the only people who are willing to stand up to the right-wing are communists and other far-left groups, whose policies are no less destructive. Dranland is now caught between three equally unappealing options. On one hand, there are those who almost worship rampant and unrestrained corporate greed, "slash-and-burn" budget cuts which target the most vulnerable in our society, and the total destruction of any semblance of equality of opportunity. On the other, there are those who revere, with equal fervence, the total subordination of the individual to the state (or a collection of communes), which is inherently immoral and will lead to many great harms. The third option is certainly no more beneficial for Dranland - nationalistic parties who hope to divide Dranland on the basis of ethnicity, instead of emphasising the unity of the Dranish people and the mutual respect we have for each other. We feel that it is important that someone is willing to restore some semblance of sanity to this situation. We feel that someone must find a third way, which does not follow the extreme and divisive ideologies of the major parties currently active in Dranland. With these considerations in mind, we have decided that the formation of a centrist party, the Democratic Progressive Party, will be beneficial to both political discourse in Dranland and to the welfare of the Dranish public. The DPP will support centre-left policies, which we feel to be most consistent with our faith in compassion and partnership. We believe: - in the inherent value of each individual. The protection and promotion of human rights and dignity must be at the forefront of government policy. Among these rights is the right to determine, as a community, the way in which Dranland is government - that is, through democracy; - in social justice and equality of opportunity. If everyone is equal, as we and most Dranians believe, they must be afforded an equal chance to succeed in life, even if they come from a disadvantaged background. A just society is most conductive to the general welfare and contentment, and will reduce the social conflict which has plague Dranland in recent years; - that a regulated market is the best vehicle for the people's welfare. The free market is, generally speaking, the most effective means of ensuring prosperity and economic growth. However, it is not a panacea, and must be regulated to curb its worst excesses and to ensure that its benefits go to society in general, not just and elite few; - in supporting society's most vulnerable people through comprehension welfare. It is unethical and barbaric to abandon people who are not able to cope on their own. Welfare certainly does have a cost, but it is the mark of a civilised and humane society. We believe in extending a helping hand, and that people have obligation to one another; - in high-quality, universal healthcare and education. People are entitled to have reasonable access to healthcare, and to a good start in life which will open up a world of opportunity. We believe that the state's role is to provide these essential services, regardless of one's ability to pay. Wealth is no the sole criterion of human worth; - that we ought to tolerate diversity in lifestyles and ethnicities. Diversity, not homogenity, is what makes Dranland strong. We must not seek to accentuate these differences to divide Dranian from Dranian, but we must accept people for who they are. Immigrants and those who live alternative lifestyles are entitled to our full respect; - that rehabilitation, and not retribution, should be the main focus of the criminal justice system. Vengeful bloodlust is no way for a society to maintain order; instead, it encourages a culture of brutality. Everyone, however must we disapprove of their actions, deserves a second chance to contribute meaningfully to society. We therefore support the abolition of the death penalty; - that stopping crime is no excuse for infringments on civil liberty. While maintaining order is crucial to the stability of Dranland, it cannot be used as a pretext for the government to act illiberally in violation of our freedoms and privacy. The government must act with restraint when fighting crime; - that the environment must be protected. We believe that the natural world is beautiful and precious, and that the wholesale destruction of the environment out of venal motives is immoral and will result in a major ecological disaster which will harm all life, including humans; - in nuclear disarmament. Nuclear weapons are hugely destructive and inherently immoral. They are capable of causing untold damage and grief. No nation which considers itself civilised should not possess these horrid weapons of mass destruction; - that Dranland must end its neutrality. We believe fervently in world peace, and believe also that Dranland has a responsibility to the rest of the world to help maintain this peace and to prevent the commission of crimes against humanity, even if we are not directly involved. We have obligations to others, including foreigners. Given our commitment to democracy and democratic participation, the DPP will be organised in a way which gives rank-and-file members a strong say in the direction of the party. It is encouraging that most other parties - even those with ideologies that we strongly oppose - accept the need for participation from ordinary members. We feel, however, that all parties, whatever their ideologies, should act in a spirit of constructive compromise, instead of destructive invective. Open-mindedness is key in the formulation of good public policy; throwing insults is not. It is important that disagreement does not mean disrespect. More bi-partisanship and less confrontation will surely be beneficial for Dranish politics. We hope that the people of Dranland are receptive to our message of compassion, openness and progress. We hope that they will support our agenda, but never dogmatically - while feuding is damaging, nothing is more helpful to a political party than friendly, if passionate, internal debate. Most of all, we hope that we have given voice to those who opposed the polarisation of Dranish politics and the increasing domination of the right wing, but had no means with which to express their frustration and discontent with the parlous state of our political system. Today, we extend an invitation to the Dranish people: join us if you want Dranland to become a better place. Dranland is a great country, but we can be so much greater.
