Description[?]:

The politics of left and right have failed. Front Populaire seeks to represent the average citizen's interest instead of forcing them to align with a certain ideology. As such, we are a syncretic movement; neither left nor right, but combining the best aspects of both in order to provide sensible and competent government.

History:

Founding (4184-4186):
Front Populaire (FP) was founded as the “Front Populaire d’Aldurie” in 4184 by Patrick Rouselle, a popular television personality and news anchor. Strongly supported by those in the ideological center, Rouselle sought to offer voters an alternative to typical left-right politics by promoting direct democracy and discouraging corruption. At that point, Alduria was a nation in crisis, with only two parties holding parliamentary representation: the center-right Union Démocratique Populaire (UDP) and the right-libertarian Parti des Droits Individuels (PDI). Both parties had become bloated and stagnant, with no bills proposed in the Chambre des Représentants between 4182 and 4184, when the Front Populaire began pushing its agenda from an extra-parliamentary position. Over the next two years, FP continued its advocacy, proposing motions to lessen civil rights restrictions and reform the structure of the Aldurian government.

Rouselle’s Presidency (4186-4188):
In January 4186, the FP won the legislative elections by a landslide, capturing 64.18% of the vote, giving them 353 out of 550 seats in the Chambre des Représentants. In addition, Rouselle was elected Président de la République with 72.39% of the votes, beating the Jacques Souvrainfort of the fascist Cœur d’Aldurie (CA), Mathieu Torchard of the left-anarchist Anarchiste Syndicat (AS), and Angèle Vincent of the leftist Communiste d'Aldurie (CMA). With this automatic majority in the Chambre, the FP were able to form a cabinet made up exclusively of their own ministers, with Jean-Paul Barnier at the helm as President of the Council of Ministers. Barniers cabinet was able to push through social and economic reforms, which held true to the FP’s platform of greater economic prosperity coupled with less restrictive social reforms. Central to Rouselle’s platform was the expansion of the Chambre des Représentants to 750 members, as well as the shortening of term limits to two years. As he often said on his news program, Rousselle believed that such government reforms would discourage career politicians and encourage more active citizen engagement with the democratic process. In March 4188, the Government Dynamism Act was passed, triggering a special election and changing the rules of Aldurian politics forever.

Communist Coalition (4188-4190):
FP suffered heavy losses in the March 4188 special election, losing half of their seat share and coming in third behind CA and CMA. Rouselle failed to make it to the second round of the presidential election, coming in third as well. In order to prevent the fascist CA from gaining power, FP entered a coalition led by the CMA, with the center-left Parti Progressiste and the AS as fellow junior parties. Though the coalition contained major ideological differences, and divisive proposals oftentimes splintered the coalition’s vote, the parties were able to work together in order to prevent the CA from pursuing the most draconian of their policies. Meanwhile, Rouselle announced that he would run for president again in 4190, shutting down challengers from within the party.

Centrist Coalition (4190-):
Rousselle fared even worse in this election, coming in fourth. Then the unimaginable: CA’s Jacques Souvrainfort was able to capture the presidency, defeating the incumbent Angèle Vincent of the CMA. CA also became the largest party in the Chambre as well, losing only 6 seats, even with the arrival of the right-libertarian Chemin de Liberte (CL). The CMA went down to the second party, whereas the FP suffered the greatest losses in the Chambre, losing 36 seats, but remaining the third party. The FP National Committee called for the resignation of Barnier from the post of party leader, and an election was held to determine his replacement. Struck by the inability of the far-left to combat the rise of fascism, Minister of Internal Affairs Rachelle Dubois ran for party leader against Bendiri Rep. David Vidal, promising to form a coalition without the aid of the CA or CMA. Winning in a landslide, Dubois submitted a proposal to form a coalition with AS, CL, and PP, with only the title of President of the Council of Ministers going to the FP. The cabinet was passed with the consent of all parties involved, and a government was finally in place that could counter the fascist control of the executive branch. Although the FP was achieving success in government, many in the party’s youth faction felt that Rouselle was out of touch and closed-minded. When he announced he would be seeking the presidency a fourth time, Rouselle believed that he would be able to glide through his primary matchup against Taiko Timoti, a 39 year-old Malvic-rights activist from Fleurville. Although she excited her base and promising a more socially liberal future for the FP, Timoti only managed to grab 47% of the vote to Rouselle’s 53%, making him the nominee.
