Bill: The Strengthening of the Family Unit Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Lodamun Liberal-Conservative Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: June 2415
Description[?]:
The Lodamun Liberal-Conservative Party believes that if divorce laws are slack, this will lower the sanctity of marriage, and allow it to become some frivelant, virtually meaningless union of any two people, regardless of whether or not they think they will stay together as a married couple. This is not the concept of marriage and never has been. Marriage is not a union to be entered into and forfeit whenever the subjects please - it is a serious, life-long bond between a man and a woman and should only ever be broken if done so with grounded cause. Simply put, if a couple does not have the fortitude to stay together for life, then they should not have been married in the first place. We would like to re-invigorate the santity of marriage. As for adoption, we believe that parents adopting children must be assured to be fit for parenthood. We cannot simply hand babies to whoever wants them - many children will be given to parents of an unsavory nature and will have a poor upbringing. This is counter-productive to the idea of adoption. If parents are to adopt, they should first prove that they are capable of raising a healthy child. Thus, we propose the following legislation. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change The government's policy concerning adoption.
Old value:: Regulation is used to screen out only those with a previous history of child abuse.
Current: Adoption is regulated by the government. Applicants can adopt after a routine check-up.
Proposed: Adoption is regulated by private, recognised organisations.
Article 2
Proposal[?] to change The legality of divorces (if marriages are recognised).
Old value:: Divorces are legal, be it mutual consent, grounded cause or if one partner wants it.
Current: Divorces are legal, be it mutual consent, grounded cause or if one partner wants it.
Proposed: Divorces are only legal with grounded cause (such as adultery, or violence).

Message | So, no debate again eh? Article 2 would probably have passed, but 2 is ridiculous. You cannot force religious beliefs upon anyone, and these beliefs about Divorce are stictly religious ones. Keep in mind, I am a man of faith. |

Message | This bill is completely dictorial. The state has no right to force religious beliefs on people. If a couple wants to be divorced, they should have the right to do so. |

Message | But marriage is a religious union. How can one consider something in regards to marriage without first considering that it is a religious bond? |

Message | I'm willing to debate article one. I think it bers thinking about, protecting our children is a priority. In fact, Free Lodamun's primary funding comes from one of those accredited organisations. However, article 2? Let's be honost, people make mistakes. Free Lodamun was founded by men of their word, who see marriage and look at it as a holy union, who make decisions and stand by them. However, we know two things: 1. We can't expect everyone to live up to these standards, people are human and prone to error, this is simply the way of things and 2. this is a slippery slope. If you admit the judeo-christian/ muslim roots to this or not, it doesn't matter. This can very understandably be viewed as a religious law. There isn't anything wrong with that, but next you have people pining for sharia law and have men lobbying for the ability to say "i divorce you" three times and have done with it. That's extreme, but this will simply lead to more religious legislation and the people will not support it. |

Message | We have deleted article 2. Hopefully more parties will now be able to support. We are certainly a party of comprimise, and are more than happy to comprimise certain policies if it will mean a wider support. |

Message | OOC: Oh...actually I guess you can't change it once its gone to a vote. Well, I'll let this one go through and then I'll post a new one later with just article 1. |
