An Act to permit the employment of those under adult age, under the following circumstances: 1. Under the age of twelve [less a day], children may not seek nor accept gainful employment, internships or other forms of employment in industrial, office, or retail establishments. 2. Between the age of twelve year [less a day] and the age of majority, minors may accept gainful employment, internships, or other forms of employment, but must be limited to 25.5 hours per week or less in industrial settings 2. Retail outlets may employ children between the age of twelve years [less a day] and the age of majority, provided that they are limited to 25.5 hours per week or less during the operating months of public schools (off-periods they are restricted to 42.5 hours per week or less) 3. Movie, television, live theatres and other performance arts must limit minor participants over the age of five years [less a day] to 20 hours per week or less during performances (movies and television must count all time spent on set; theatres must count all time spent on-stage and in the designated performer's spaces within the theatre) - those less than five years of age are prohibited from participating in productions by non-educational institutions. 4. All employers of minors must seek the consent of their legal guardians to accept their employment in their organization. 5. No minor shall be allowed to work longer than 8.5 hours per day, and must be allowed 1 thirty minute lunch break and 2 fifteen minute breaks (with pay) during this time; for work periods greater than 4 hours but less than 6 hours, they must be allowed 1 thirty minute lunch break and 1 fifteen minute break (with pay) during this time; for work periods less than 4 hours, they must be allowed 1 fifteen minute break (with pay) during this time. 6. The employment of minor by their parents or guardians in their own businesses shall be permitted without specific regulation, provided it does not jeopardize the safety of or interfere with the education of said minors - abuse of child labour by parents shall be defined and punishable under criminal child abuse and neglect statutes. |
