Bill: Market Rate Housing Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Maroon Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 2110

Description[?]:

The government should not provide public housing or engage in silly urban renewal projects, often involving the seizure of private property. These projects turn poor but vibrant neighborhoods into run down slums for drug dealers, petty criminals, and inescapable poverty and ignorance. Meanwhile, the middle-class people that cities depend on for their tax base will move out to escape escalating crime, trapping the poor in urban areas with no realistic hope of advancement. Instead, we should subsidize rents for those on low incomes or build market-rate housing for them. A private apartment owner has an incentive to screen tenants and take care of his property far more than bureaucrats do, and thus will allow the poor to afford mixed-income housing, so that they don't develop a destructive culture and are able to get an education and advance upwards socially. This way, we fight homelessness without destroying our cities.

MessageWe should not isolate the poor in their own communities, but rather, through subsidies, allow them to afford to live in apartments that others in society live in, to encourage tolerance and mutual learning.
