MessageMarriage is a religious institution, and the state therefore has no role in its application. A civil partnership is different because it is religion neutral but gives couples the opportunity to have their relationship recognised in law and so be privy to the legal benefits. If couples wish to also have a religious ceremony then that is entirely up to them.
