MessageWhy is it assumed that transferring ownership of TOC's to the public sector would necessarily make it more 'dependable'? Private TOC's answer to and are held account by their customers directly - if commuters are unsatisfied with the services being provided, many will simply opt for alternative modes of transport, and the TOC loses profits.
This is not so in the case of public TOC's. They are assured funding, regardless of their standards of service, and so they will not be compelled to improve - dissatisfied people will have only the federal government to complain to. Furthermore, as they are not 'user pays', many tax-payers who do not catch trains will be paying for services that are irrelevant to them.
We are not an extreme capitalist party or a libertarian party - we do not constantly argue for privatization on ideological grounds, or on the basis that the 'individual' is supreme or anything of the sort. But a privately owned TOC is simply more efficient, and we can see no reason for TOC's to be made public. It's simply common sense.
