| Honourable Colleagues, We believe that the government should not spend the taxpayer's money on funding sports clubs. However, we do regonize that in many cases, local areas benefit greatly from the presence of a football team or other sports club. A sports team can increase city revenue by increasing tourism and bringing more locals into the downtown area to shop and visit restaurants and bars. Since cities and local governments often benefit greatly from the presence of a sports team, sometimes they are quite willing to help fund stadiums, arenas, or other facilities in order to attract or keep a club. Therefore, we wish to introduce this bill which would prohibit the national government from funding sports clubs, but would allow local governments to pay for the facilities of such clubs if they want to. |
