Bill: Condemnation and Reprimand of the UPK for Authoritarianism

Details

Submitted by[?]: Kirlawan National Party (Leftists)

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill is a resolution. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: May 2740

Description[?]:

The KNP brings before the assembly today a resoloution to condemn and reprimand the UPK for its authoritarian tendencies. We believe this is necessary because of four dangerous things the UPK has done to attack our democracy and our civil liberties. We are proposing this resolution for the following reasons:

1. The UPK attempted to grant the president sweeping powers to be both the head of state and the head of government, and therefore allow him to all powerful and force through his will. They wished, and in doing so showed incredible disdain for deliberative processes of this assembly, to take away our power to designate the head of government, and by extension the government itself, and place it in the hands of an all powerful autocrat.

2. The UPK then proceeded to attempt to allow the president and prime minister to force through legislation, without the consent of this assembly. It asked that they be allowed executive orders, so that they may ignore the will of the assembly and proceed with massively unpopular measures. This could mean that they could force through authoritarian and massively unpopular measures, to the detriment of the people. They have attacked our democractic institutions and attempted to garner dictatorial powers for the executive.

3. The UPK has attempted to censor the media with its 'hate speech' laws, and shown massive contempt for the free speech and free expression of Kirlawans. They have attempted to give the government the power to censor publications for not following the government line. They have given the government the power to perhaps denote anything as 'hate speech', even criticism of politicians.

4. The UPK then proceeded, in the Merkanese assembly, to stifle debate on bilingualism and censure those who did not share their views on the subject. Rather than debate our politicians as honourable democrats, they attempted to silence them for their ideas in a shamlessly authoritarian fashion.

It is clear that the UPK cannot tolerate people expressing ideas to the contrary of its own, and has become incredibly reactionary when they have done so. They have attempted to garner extraordinary and dangerous powers for the government and our executive officials, hoping that they would be able to ignore the will of assembly, which they clearly hold in great contempt. The KNP does not like measures like these, but the UPK has started the censure wars. Let us show the UPK that their disdain for the assembly and for democracy is intolerable in this assembly, and let us send them a clear message that they do not have the support of the assembly when they behave in this fashion. Let us be clear, this is not a censure, this is merely a message of dissaproval that we need to send to the UPK.

Unfortunately the decree bill was withdrawn before being put to a vote, due to massive opposition, but I am sure the right honourable assemblymen do recall it.

MessageTo explicity target an individual political party in the national legislature sets a dangerous precedent. We urge our leftist partners to desist in these efforts.

MessageThe UPK is has never been nor will it ever be an authoritarian party. We do not favor a style of government that takes away the rights of the people and controls their every move. If we have angered anybody we are truly sorry. However, we stand by the following bills that were mentioned as authoritarian. It is true that the description and topics stressed in these bills may have that theme, but the overall goal is not authoritarianism.

MessageTo the Orangeists, we will consider their ideas, but the UPK did target the KNP in Merkan province, they must recognize that this does have consequences. We must remember that they attempted to censure our politicians and silence them for their beliefs.

MessageWe shall extend an olive branch to the UPK, in exchange from desisting in the future from attempting to censure our politicians, we will desist in attempting to reprimand the UPK in the assembly. Our Orangeist partners are right to say that attacks on individuals and parties have no place in a collaborative assembly, Therefore, if you can guarantee you will stop using gag tactics on us, we shall not use them on you. Hopefully, if you accept this, we can move on from this unfortunate episode.

MessageWe are pleased to announce that the dispute between the UPK and KNP has been resolved amicably, and that the KNP now opposed all attempts to reprimand the UPK. The UPK has agreed to stop censuring our politicians as well. We now hope that we can put these unfortunate episodes behind us and get back to working on issues that matter to Kirlawans.
