Bill: Legalisation of Prostitution - 2838
Details
Submitted by[?]: United Democrats
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: April 2839
Description[?]:
Whether we like it or not, prostitution is a reality. Young women are being taken advantage of in an unregulated and dangerous environment. The NDP propose making Prostitution a legal, regulated practice. By allowing certain prostitution businesses to exist, we can regulate these companies. In recent surveys it is thought that around 60% of prostitutes have a sexually transmitted disease and around 90% have had an STD sometime in the last six months. The threat of STD's is huge in the illegal prostitution market, by regulating and creating guidelines we can stop the spread of harmful diseases. With regulations we can assure that all prostitutes will get a minimum wage and will be safe within their job. It is simply not enough to outlaw this act because, as we can all see, the legality of prostitution will not stop people practicing. Instead of spending tax payers money on trying to stop prostitution we could tax these businesses and lower some essential goods taxes. |

Message | If we were to take the legislative approach to all unhealthy and morally reprehensible behaviour that 'we cannot prevent it and therefore should not try', what kind of society would we be living in? Certainly not a civilized one. The reality that prostitution still prevails is not an excuse to legalize it - on the contrary, it is an indication that more should be done to stop it. The RHP does not subscribe to the view that prostitution is a 'victimless crime' - the victims of prostitution are civility, decency, and order. Where prostitution is present in a society, civility clearly died long ago, and moral perversion has reached such a high that it is considered acceptable for individuals to pay women for debasing sexual favours. Sexual behaviour often has an impact on people beyond merely those who are directly involved. However, this is not a matter for the federal government to involve itself in - let local governments decide individually, on behalf of their communities and their concerns, whether prostitution should be illegal and how it should be regulated. Government closer to home is more representative and effective government. |

Message | Not sure about this one. Yes, legalising prostitution would enable prostitutes to unionise to obtain better conditions and pay but, how many prostitutes want everyone to know they are a prostitute? Furthermore, should the government be obtaining revenue from women selling their bodies? By legalising it, is the Government condoning such behaviours as acceptable? Are we telling our children and young adults it is a legitmate career? I think the Government needs to send a clear message that they see prostitution as the exploitation of women and as such condemn it. It should be noted as well that we can not lower essential goods taxes as they are currently untaxed. |

Message | But surely the act as it is now is exploitation of women. If it was a recognized profession with guidelines and proper pay and holiday pay and all the things you get with a job, wouldn't that be better? I understand the act of prostitution is seedy, I would like to see legal brothels set-up in order to keep these women off the streets and do ensure that they are safe at all times. |
