Message | Madam Speaker, increasing the prices of food would do nothing but aggravate property. Further more, this is not a value-added tax as the bill title implies, but a sales tax, which is quite different. |

Message | Rt Hon Margaret Moore, Finance Secretary: Madam Speaker, perhaps the gentleman could explain the debt to which he refers. The budget is currently in slight surplus, meaning we do not have a deficit to pay back. The surplus also means that any pre-existing debt is gradually paid off. Madam Speaker, over the last 50-60 years, whatever one may think of the CLP, one thing we have always been extremely careful of is ensuring that the people of this country do not have to cope with government debt. |
