Bill: Local Governments Act

Details

Submitted by[?]: Anarcho-Primitivist Concern

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: December 2945

Description[?]:

Local areas should be able to determine the best system of appointing local governnment officers depending on their regions. In some towns, the mayor is a powerful figure with a lot of responsibility, in others, the main role of a mayor is as a figurehead and all the real work of governing is done by local council.

We believe it is best for central government to remove itself from local decision making, provided that local government is democratic and legally run.

MessageCitizens should be able to elect their mayor in direct elections. Indirectly electing mayors creates a system where the mayor is accountable to the council that chose them, not the people whose lives their policy affects.

MessageI think you miss the point, which is that citizens should be able to choose how they elect local government.

A directly elected mayor makes sense in most towns. But in some villages it may be considered a waste of money to elect both a mayor and a council.

There are also situations where people may want a different system. For instance, two towns close to each other may desire to have a single mayor to oversee both of their interests, or a joint administration of some kind.

MessageThis is not indirect elections, this is devolution and letting themself decide.
