Bill: Gun Ownership

Details

Submitted by[?]: Socialist Party of Darnussia

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: September 2144

Description[?]:

Individuals should be allowed to own guns, but there should be strict license conditions. Currently, only people in professions requiring guns (i.e. the military, police, etc) may own guns. Civilians should have the right to bear arms as long as there are strict regulations on them. People should not be denied the ability to defend themselves with regulated firearms. Also, strictly regulated firearms are needed for hunting (currently firearms are not allowed for hunting). Finally, if only the military and police can own guns, people in Darnussia are more vulnerable. They cannot defend themselves against serious incidents of police brutality and policemen who know that the civilian population has no firearms could potentially abuse their special privilege of owning a gun.

MessageSocial Democratic Party, why are you entirely against gun ownership unless it's professionally required? For reasons of safety? It would surely be at least as safe if gun ownership was allowed for civilians but regulated under strict license conditions. In fact, it could be safer because, as I stated, people will be able to defend themselves if attacked with lethal force. Plus, I also stated that, if only the police and military have guns, police brutality could result if the police or military abuse their privilege of having guns when they know that the civilian population is completely unarmed. I thought that the Social Dems would support a measure that would help to reduce police brutality. Also, if you are still worried about safety, the strict license regulations will make it certain that nobody dangerous, nobody who has committed violent crimes, and nobody who is mentally insane will be allowed to legally own a gun. This proposal is just a little step down the ladder. Really, you can't just idealistically say "Well, nobody should really own a gun because guns are bad". You must look at what the actual effects of any important decision would be. Why won't you vote for this bill?

MessageIt's a bit of a stalemate either way.

If you have a gun, you can defend yourself; if you don't, you can't.

However, if people have guns on them, it's quite easy for someone to flip and do something they'll later regret. In that respect it's best to outlaw guns, as it will reduce deaths on that behalf.

Another point is - would you really be able to defend yourself? If a gunman was to take out a gun in the street, turn it on you and fired, would you be able to defend yourself? Not likely. You won't be expecting it and, by the time you grab your gun, he'll have already fired. Not only that, but your gun might not be loaded and armed. And if it is, you run the risk of shooting yourself by accident.

The bottom line is that the vast majority of murders won't be prevented through having a gun, rather, murders will increase because more rogues or simply people who may flip will have and be more able to show guns. Legalising guns is good for preventing shoplifting, where you might have a gun under the counter, but otherwise it's not much good.

Random fact: Players consent to the reasonable and predictable consequences of the role-play they consent to. For example, players who role-play their characters as committing criminal offences should expect those characters to experience the predictable judicial consequences of that.
