Message | Although the current government’s policy of dissolving authority to local government is largely successful, the GLPoT advocates the legalisation of cannabis on a national scale for the following reasons: 1) The legalisation of cannabis on a national scale will allow the uniform taxation of the substance which is currently traded illegally between areas where it is legal/illegal. Taxation of this substance will both add to the state finances and detract from those of criminal organisations 2) The establishment of a national cannabis industry will create a number of legal jobs for law abiding citizens across the country involved in the production, transportation and so forth of the product 3) Legalising cannabis on a national scale will mean a significant decrease in judicial cases and individuals incarcerated in state prisons for relatively minor drug offences. This both frees up prison space for serious offenders and reduces the cost to the state of maintaining prisons/carrying out numerous judicial cases 4) It is an expression of basic human rights to allow individuals to consume what they want and promotes a culture of individual awareness as the state trusts citizens to be informed and make their own decisions. The current system of dissolving authority on this issue to local government implies a lack of solidarity and continuity in the trust the government places in its citizens 5) Current legislation allows the legal consumption of alcohol which is scientifically proven to be more damaging to an individuals health than cannabis In short the GLPoT believes this bill will boost the state economy by providing a taxable nationwide industry, reduce unemployment through the creation of new jobs across the country, reduce crime, reduce the number of minor court cases/imprisonments thereby reducing state expenditure, promote a culture of personal awareness in citizens trusted to make their own informed decisions. We invite debate on this issue... |

Message | Normally we are against legalization of this substance. However your arguments are extremely convincing. I would vote yes to this if there were regulations or stipulations similar to alcohol in that people would not be permitted to smoke it in public places unless in a licensed establishment. We don't want to have to walk around smelling pot, looking at people smoking weed at the bus stop, or in front of the store.. in groups, or individually anymore than we want to see people milling about drinking alcohol from bottles or glasses in public places. |

Message | In response to the issue of regulation highlighted by the speaker for the After Foster Care Party we agree that the use of cannabis would indeed need to be regulated as other currently legal drugs such as alcohol are. Just because cannabis would be legalised does not mean it should be given a higher social standing than other drugs but instead, because it will likely only be taken by a minority, should be used with respect to those other members of the public who are not themselves users. |
