| Message | This will hurt the economy by creating a lack of young recruits in the jobs market. Military service should be voluntary - not everyone is suited to military service - and compulsory military service will only create a substandard military because it will be predominantly people who do not want to serve. We would rather have a smaller, voluntary, world class military. |

| Message | The aim of this bill is not to have a huge conscript army. Rather, this is to foster a military discipline, physical and mental fitness and to inculcate a sense of leadership and responsibility into our youth. Young adults will serve a term of 1 or 2 years in the military before going off to college or grad school. Their job prospects would not be hurt - on the contrary, their performance at their workplaces would be stellar. Since this is a temporary service, we would not have a substandard military. We would still retain our core professional, voluntary standing army. |
