Message | Herr Präsident, I would hardly call the system as it exists a "viable career choice". A very basic subsistence income is just enough to live on, not a luxurious state-sponsored life. I hope the right honourable gentleman was not implying that those on the basic subsistence income were seriously overpaid, while many of them want to work and are scraping to get by. |

Message | Herr Präsident, it is true that the minimum income is not a payment of huge size, but it nonetheless sets wrong incentives, and it is at least theoretically possible for a person to live on it without working. We can help struggling working people more efficiently by increasing the role of marketplace competition to bring prices down and also by providing subsidies for crucial services such as transportation or energy as we have proposed in other bills. A minimum income that goes beyond temporary assistance until finding a viable job, however, is not a policy we consider either economically sound nor socially justified.
