Zardugal is a nation on the continent of Majatra, whose role is to represent a modern-day Byzantine Empire, but with Esperanto as its main language. As it's based on Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture, Zardugal is largely a Balkan and Middle Eastern nation with much smaller Islamic influence and a continuation of Rûm/Melkite cultures in the Middle East. One can think of Zardugal as a Roman counterpart to Kalopia or a Hellenic counterpart to Selucia.

Tokundian = Serbian (http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Tokundian_language)

Majatran = Arabic (http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Majatran_language)
Old Tokundian = Old Church Slavonic (http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Old_Tokundian)

The most widely spoken language in Zardugal, and the language of government, the military, and the upper class, is Augustan (Esperanto), the native language of the Augustans. Augustan was born from the vernacular Selucian (Latin) spoken by the ruling class of the Augustan Empire, while its official language was classical Kalopian (Ancient Greek). Augustan emerged as a distinct literary language after the fall of the Empire, and became the main identifier of Augustan ethnicity. Augustan is written in the Kalopian (Greek) alphabet, and occasionally in the Selucian (Latin) script. The language's medieval predecessor, Arcaicam Aùgustanam (Arcaicam Esperantom) is occasionally used as a language of prestige and high culture.

Apart from Augustan, several other languages are spoken by their respective ethnic groups, namely Tokundian (Serbian) by Tokundians, Mallan (Amharic) by Mallans, Irkawan (Coptic) by Irkawans, etc. Most inhabitants of Zardugal are however fluent in Augustan.

The Old Tokundian language (Church Slavonic) was the language of culture of Deltaria in the Middle Ages, and it remains in use as the liturgical language of the Terran Patriarchal Church. In Zardugal it replaced Ancient Kalopian (Ancient Greek) as the language of religion after the medieval migration of Tokundians to Zardugal.

Character names should reflect Zardugal's cultural background, and most characters should have Esperanto names. Party names may be in Esperanto and/or English. These links can help with translations and character names:

OVERVIEW AND CULTURE

Cultural Origins: Selucia, Kalopia, Cobura, Deltaria; influences from all other Majatran cultures
RL Cultural Influences: Hellenistic Kingdoms, Late Roman Empire, Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Greek Orthodox & Greek Catholic Christians in the Middle East (Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, Syria, Turkey)

Zardugal has a culture largely based on the Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire, as well as on the various Hellenistic Kingdoms (mainly Macedonian, Seleucid, and Ptolemaic Empires), and on the modern-day peoples with Byzantine/post-Byzantine heritage. As Zardugal is culturally integrated into the cultures of Majatra, it has many elements in common with all surrounding nations. Overall, Zardugal can be said to have a largely Rûm, Melkite, and Rumelian culture, and as such it is based on RL Antiochian Greek Christians (Eastern Orthodox & Eastern Catholics of the Levant) and the Orthodox countries in the Balkans (Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece). Additionally, Zardugal has a number of Coptic, Sub-Saharan African, Slavic, and Central Asian steppe cultural influences.

BRIEF PRE-GAME HISTORY

The cultural identity of Zardugal stems from the Ancient/Early Medieval Augustan Empire (http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Augustan_Empire), based on the Eastern Roman Empire, and which ruled most of the South of the continent. The Augustan Empire lasted until the 15th century CE, when Tokundian and Majatran raids precipitated an eventual collapse. For a while, most of Zardugal was a part of the Ahmadi Caliphate (http://particracy.wikia.com/wiki/Ahmadi_Caliphate), the equivalent of the Islamic Caliphate, which ruled over much of the continent. During the 16th century, the Kingdom of Zardugal, and its twin Kingdom of Cobura, was born from the ashes of the Augustan Empire, and lasted until 2117, when modern Zardugal was founded.

IN-GAME HISTORY

After a few centuries of alternation between republicanism and monarchism, the Zardic Federation, founded in 2730, gradually became one of the Great Powers of Terra, and the Federation established an extensive colonial empire on the continents of Dovani, Vascania, and Temania. Although the Zardic colonial empire came to an end after the Southern Hemisphere War (3343-3355) and Zardic hegemony in Majatra was challenged, successfully or not, numerous times, Zardugal remained one of the dominant powers on the continent and all of Terra to this day.

ETHNIC GROUPS

The Augustans are the descendants of Selucian (Roman) colonists from the north, who initially settled on the shores of the Majatran Sea and later expanded southwards. Their name comes from the medieval Augustan Empire, and at the time the word "Augustan" referred to any of its citizens, irrespective of language or ethnic background. After the fall of the Empire the name came to designate the speakers of the Augustan language in Zardugal and Cobura, which continues to this day, although the word is occasionally used to designate other peoples who claim the heritage of the Augustan Empire. Augustans are characterized by a blend of Enetric (Graeco-Roman), Irkawan (Coptic Egyptian) and Tokundian (Serbian) cultures, and they are based on Hellenistic and Byzantine Greeks, as well as modern peoples with Byzantine culture/heritage in the Balkans and Middle East (Greeks, Serbs, Macedonians, Bulgarians, Greek Orthodox & Greek Catholic Arabs). They have a largely Balkan, Middle Eastern, and North African appearance, and they speak Augustan (Esperanto) as their main language. Most Augustans adhere to the Terran Patriarchal Church (Slavic Christianity + Slavic Mythology).

Tokundians are a Delic (Slavic) group originating in the nation of Deltaria. Their ancestors arrived in Zardugal and Cobura following a revolt of the Deltarian tribes against the Tokundian ruling class, and they have been heavily integrated into Augustan culture. Tokundians also brought their Deltarian mythology to their new homeland, which was one of the causes for the rapid adoption of the Terran Patriarchal Church by the Augustans in modern times. The number of Tokundians in Zardugal increased significantly in recent years, primarily due to their persecution in Cobura. Tokundians are based on Serbs and other Balkan Slavic peoples, and they speak Tokundian (Serbian). Most Tokundians adhere to the Terran Patriarchal Church.

The Irkawans and Mallans are two indigenous ethnic groups from the nation of Cobura in the South. The Mallans are based on Ethiopians in culture and appearance, while Irkawans are based on Coptic Egyptians and Nubians in culture and appearance. They speak Irkawan (Coptic) and Mallan (Amharic), and most adhere to the Apostolic Church of the East (Eastern Christianity).

The Jelbics are the dominant ethnic groups in Jelbania, Vanuku, Barmenia, and Pontesi, and they are based on an amalgam of nomadic Eurasian cultures such as the Tatars, Turkics, Mongols and Finno-Ugrics, and they speak Jelbék, a conlang devised solely for the PT world. Jelbics have a culture vaguely similar to the Central Asian nations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, etc. Jelbics speak Jelbic languages, and they are religiously divided between the Terran Patriarchal Church and Ahmadism (Islam).

The Majatrans resemble real-life Arabs and a significant proportion speak Majatran (Arabic) as a first language. The Majatrans settled in Zardugal in large numbers when its territory was incorporated in the Ahmadi Caliphate. Most Majatrans in Zardugal are Ahmadis.

RELIGIONS

Hosianism is a binitarian religion founded in 1 CE which believes Eliyahu of Yishelem is the Spirit of God and the Savior of mankind. The largest Hosian denomination in Zardugal is the Terran Patriarchal Church, based on Slavic Christianity with the addition of Slavic pre-Christian mythology. The Terran Patriarchal Church is based in Deltaria, and considers itself the sole legitimate heir of the medieval Augustan Church, the state church of the Augustan Empire. Old Tokundian (Church Slavonic) is its liturgical language, and the Church became dominant in Zardugal partly due to the adoption by Augustans of elements of Tokundian culture and mythology following the medieval exile of Tokundians from Deltaria. The Terran Patriarchal Church is followed primarily by Augustans and Tokundians.

The Coburan Apostolic Tewahedo Church is an autocephalous (independent) part of the Apostolic Church of the East, a Church created in 3412 by the merger of previously separated Churches. The Tewahedo Church is based on the Coptic and Ethiopian Orthodox Churches, and is followed primarily by Mallans and Irkawans.

The Aurorian Patriarchal Church, the largest Hosian denomination in Terra and founded in 3876 by the merger of the Selucian Patriarchal Church and the Theognosian Church, is represented in Zardugal by two Patriarchates, the Patriarchate of Augusta (based on Greek Catholic Churches) and the Patriarchate of the East (based on various Eastern Catholic Churches, representing the Coptic Catholic and Ethiopian Catholic Churches in Zardugal). The Aurorian Patriarchal Church is based on the Roman Catholic Church.

Ahmadism is a religion that was founded in 1186 and believes Akim to be the only God and Ahmad to be his Prophet. Ahmadism has a very long presence in Zardugal, mainly the result of the territory's conquest by the Ahmadi Caliphate. Most Ahmadis in Zardugal belong to the Majatran ethnicity, but many Mallans and Augustans are also Ahmadi. The Israi sect of Ahmadism, based on Sunni Islam is the most widely followed in Zardugal, and there are significant Abadi (Shi'a) and Halawi (Alawi & Alevi) minorities.

MessageIn the middle of the night, between the hours of 1:00 AM and 3:00 AM, our nation's oil rigs were brutally attacked by a special stealth bombing campaign by the Zardic government. Hundreds of innocent lives were burned, shot, or ripped to pieces. Let me affirm that I, along with everyone in this nation, mourn for the families of the victims, and our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who have lost a loved one as a result of this barbaric attack on our homeland. I wish to confess that the government was unaware of this and this certainly did come as a surprise to us all. However, three oil rigs remain and they have been repaired and are now fully operational.

My concerns now to go the purpose of this war. I wish all of us, both Voronans and those around Terra who are watching, to ask themselves, what are we fighting for? I will deal with the allegations of the Zardic government first and foremost. The first reason, which they have claimed numerous times, for their declaration of war on our nation is because we stated that we would invade their nation. I will resolve this once and for all right now. A fascist, far-right, fringe political party that was disbanded six years ago does not speak for the the other thirty-nine million Voronans. I will repeat, a fascist, far--right, fringe political party that was disbanded six years ago does not speak for the other thirty-nine million Voronans in this country. Let us consider how that would even be a possibility? Here is a nation, obviously with the capacity to send stealth bombers halfway across Terra, that could've easily killed every single person on this island. Why then, do they feel that we are such a threat, a nation they have repeatedly stated was "undeveloped", that they feel that they must build a coalition of nations to combat Voronan "aggression"? Who stands to benefit from this war? Vorona? Or is it Zardugal?

The second flimsy reason that the Zardic government, currently controlled by two parties equal in warmongering and imperialistic thought, has trumpeted as a casus belli against Vorona, is that we have taken over their oil rigs. I will be frank. Yes, the Voronan government did take Zardic oil rigs. Last year, our nation took control of sixteen oil rigs that were within our nautical territory as a sovereign nation to use for our own use. Is that really significant to the Zardic government? The sixteen oil rigs that our nation took from Zardugal, which were never authorized to construct and maintain such oil rigs in the first place, were well within our nation's exclusive economic zone. Yet, this leads us to the question: is it worth the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians, and is it worth the solvency of the entire global economy, for sixteen oil rigs?

I have promised my nation and my people that Vorona would fight this war to the end. It pains me that some people around Terra see Vorona as the villain. That somehow, our nation of thirty-nine million is a grave threat to Zardugal. Perhaps Zardic diplomacy is greater than I expected it to be. Perhaps their diplomats actually are capable of manipulating their listeners to the extent that they believe that yes, Vorona is the villain. I, however, with many other leaders throughout Terra, know It is common knowledge that Zardugal has a perennial tendency to warmonger and to attempt to conquer every nation it lays its lustful eyes upon. What is to stop the beast that is Zardugal and its obsession with oil. Apparently, there is no force capable of doing that now, since we have currently come to a time where the world now depends on Zardic oil stability. Terra is now at the whim of one nation - the whim of one person. Why must nations not involved at all in this conflict face domestic strife due to fluctuating oil prices, largely the fault of Zardugal?

Fine, let us consider what happens if this war were to end in Zardugal's favor. What then? Would Vorona return the sixteen oil rigs that Zardugal has murdered hundreds of innocent lives for? Would that paltry amount, compared to the gargantuan number of rigs it already owns, finally satisfy Zardugal? Will the Zardic politicians who have twisted their hands and words to get what they want then turn their backs to the world, pat each other on the back, and then go home to face a naive population which deems them "heroes"? What then? I will be clear as to why Vorona is in this war. It's very simple. Because Zardugal declared war on Vorona, with the two reasons stated above as the justification for such, I in turn believed it would be beyond immoral to not respond at all. If a nation authorizes legal murder of the people of another, will that other nation not retaliate? Will that other nation not do the same in turn? Does that other nation not love and not care for their friends, family, and community? No, those are not the characteristics of a people. Vorona is an island nation of a community of people. I believed it was necessary for our government to respond. And so I cringe whenever I hear that some leader or another believes we are the aggressors. We are not.

I do not know how long this war will end. I originally believed it would be a quick one. I used every opportunity to ensure that bloodshed was the last resort. I believed that Vorona could simply pressure Zardugal to back down. Did I believe that Zardugal would actually kill and destroy for sixteen oil rigs? No. I did not. I was surprised, and even hurt, when Baltusia entered the war on the side of Zardugal, of all nations, simply over the fact that I was angry that their media had implied to the Baltusian people that our government and our nation did not like Baltusia, which is false. It's disappointing that such a prospective alliance fell apart so quickly. It is even more disappointing that very few people see Zardugal for what it actually is. A grand puppeteer, playing with the strings of all the nations of the world. Bringing in one character while putting out the next. Pitting friends against friends and making enemies of us all. My plea to the world is to open their eyes to the monster that Zardugal is. I also will say this to all the people of this nation and all the leaders of the world. If those on the side of Zardugal wish for Vorona to step down, and if that would mean that innocent lives would be saved and homes, hospitals, schools, and other buildings would remain intact for use, then I shall. It is with a heavy heart that I say these words, but I cannot bear to look at the carnage and destruction any longer. I am not a Zard; I cannot smile at the death of my enemies. I am a human. Thank you.
