Message | Herr Präsident, Religious beliefs are not simply opinions - they are deep-seated, sacred beliefs that go to the heart of a person's being. We wish to protect believers from those who would insensitively insult them by design, as we would also stand firm for the ban against hate speech to maintained. Let me make one thing clear: I, too, think people should be able to disagree with religion, even joke about it or mock it. But up to a certain point, when it's clear it's not designed to insult the feelings of religious people - not doing so is a matter of common decency and we should recognise that in our laws. shr. ehrw. Message | Herr Präsident, As a Hosian myself, I share Herr Weile's abhorrence for discrimination and insults on the basis of religion. Nevertheless, freedom of speech is essential to the working of democracy, and is intrinsic to the social and political culture of the Crownlands. We are therefore of the view that the problems Herr Weile describes should be addressed in alternative ways which do not include the introduction of any kind of blasphemy law. Message | Herr Präsident, the enforcement of decency is not a proper subject for our laws. If people are offensive, we are right to be repulsed by their behaviour, but if they insist on being unpleasant and uncivil individuals, it is not our right or prerogative to ban them from doing so. This bill is an assault on free speech and an assault on civil rights, and for the absurd reason that some people might have their feelings hurt. Anton Mutschler MdR NBF Fraktionsvorsitzende |
