Bill: School Prayer Freedom Bill (-2164-)
Details
Submitted by[?]: Liberal-Progressive Union
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: January 2166
Description[?]:
As not every religious student attends a religious school, this bill allows for optional prayer for students who request to pray. This does not violate any "secular" laws, but gives religous students the option to pray, as it does not force those students who do not pray, force prayer upon them. As it is optional, denying prayer to those students who wish to, is denying those students the same civil liberties that the law was intended to protect the secular students from, the right to religous freedom is equal to the rights of secular freedoms. |
Proposals
Article 1
Proposal[?] to change The government's policy with respect to prayer in schools.
Old value:: Teacher-led prayers in schools are forbidden, except in religious schools.
Current: Teacher-led prayers in schools are encouraged.
Proposed: The government leaves this decision up to the schools themselves.

Message | Since not all religious students attend a religious school, denying them the right to pray to protect the secular students is denying the religious students their own right to religion. Optional school prayer is a better solution than the current law of restricting prayer for all students. |

Message | There is no current law denying the right of any student to pray. What the current law does is stop teacher-led prayer in schools being forced upon the individuals, something this bill removes. This will lead to pupils being forced into prayer by their peers and teachers as a matter of school policy and as such should be stopped from passing. This is a worse option than the current one. Why force children to pray if they are not religious, which is all this bill is going to do. |
