MessageYep. We increased our support in the last election therefore we have a right to address this issue

MessageWe will still vote no. The current Senate operates just fine with 245 members. We do not need to increase the number of Senators every time the population increases by 150,000 people. That would require the Senate to add a new seat every few months. We would constantly be increasing the size of the Senate by 1 seat. That is ridiculous.

Also, we just don't like the number 293. It is an awkward number.

MessageBut if we keep the number of seats the same that will mean that we may end up with huge constituencies in 20 or so years time

MessageWe will always support measures to increase the number of seats when it is done to allow greater access to decision-makers. It also allows for greater depth of talent within the Senate.

MessageIn the days that have past since we were last debating this issue my view hasn’t altered. I can therefore only repeat my argument.

In nations that have increased their number of senators to the levels you are suggesting two parties emerge as dominant and the rest have little say in what happens. How is that unappealing situation going to be good for Kundrati democracy?

MessageIf I could just add, it’s fine talking about better representation and all that sort of stuff but you have to look at the consequences of this bill if it were approved and those consequences are not good.

MessagePerhapes a less dramatic increase in seats? Maybe only and increase of 10 or 20?

MessageWe will support this. It is a just compromise, allowing for some leway and aleviating some stress on constituencies.

MessageWe are still unhappy with this amendment. The assumption still seems to be that we will raise the number of Senators indefinitely. Our Constitution is not a plaything that should be amended every time our population increases by a certain amount. We should find a number of Senators we are happy with and maintain that number.
