Description[?]:
Senators, There has been much debate on how to create Selucians out of the mass of non-citizen immigrants and foreigners currently residing in our nation. While we would be most welcoming of liberalizing immigration laws, the fact remains we have a large number of non-citizens who are not allowed to remain on our soil permanently, risking the creation of a rift between Selucians and non-Selucians, and doing nothing in terms of integrating foreigners with citizenship into Selucian society. Following the suggestion of our party leader, the honoured Senator Lucius Cassius Aquilinus, we have come to the conclusion that it is military service that is best at forging Selucians. For that purpose we propose that the Citizenship Protection Act be amended as follows: 1. Auxilia units are formed, specifically designed for non-citizens serving in the Armed Forces, with a minimum term of service of 25 years; 2. At the end of the term of service the retiring auxiliary soldier and their immediate family (spouse and children) are granted Selucian citizenship and a Selucian name; 3. The sole language of command within the Auxilia is the Selucian language; 4. Auxilia units will be led by Selucian officers. This, we hope, will be acceptable for both pro- and anti-immigration parties, as it will provide a framework allowing immigration and the presence of non-citizens while ensuring their loyalty and their eventual integration into Selucian culture and society. Message | Senators, It seems wrong to us to require people to put their lives at risk by serving in the army in order to become Selucian citizens. We accept citizenship cannot and should not be granted to every person who wants it, but we think there is a better way of organising things than what is proposed here. Message | Senators, What better way to prove one's loyalty to Selucia than to put one's life at risk for her? If this passes, in 25 years those foreigners will be more Selucian than any of us. Not to mention that it is a fair and reasonable trade; they contribute to the defence of the nation they reside in and they receive acceptance into the Selucian body politic in return. Message | Senators, The National Front has some doubts about this proposal, while we can find ourself in agreement with the principles laid forth. Our doubts are whether these foreigners will be as capable as a Selucian soldier. After all they are from another inferior nation and not as pure bred as a real Selucian soldier. Message | Senators, Of course they will not be as good as proper Selucian soldiers, which is why they will complement rather than replace the Legions. The army will then have its cannon-fodder, and the immigrants will have jobs without threatening to steal those of hard-working Selucians. Marcus Hortensius Porcus Senator |
