Bill: GM Crop Reform
Details
Submitted by[?]: National Conservative Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2172
Description[?]:
The NCP does not think the Ikradonian government should be hostage to populism in the face of overwhelming scientific fact. GM crops are good for society. They produce higher yields, using less chemicals, in harsher climates. If our agricultural sector uses GM crops then they will be able to compete internationally at a lower cost helping not only the domestic farmer but also the domestic consumer who could purchase their food at a lower price. There is no scientific evidence to suggest GM crops are harmful to the environment. That is scare-mongering by the environmental lobbies that depend upon popular outrage for influence and money. If handled carefully and safety then they can be a huge benefit to our nation. |

Message | We don't agree with this bill. It should remain banned. Health of Ikradonians is more important than profit for some fat men who don't care with anything else, besides their unique special Ferrari. |

Message | We side with the SIP once more. Tinkering with nature in such a profound way is something we will never support. |

Message | There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that GM crops are harmful. To say so is to indulge in populist myth rather than scientific discovery. Also, humanity has been tinkering with nature since we first discovered fire and tools. Domesticated animals such as the cow were developed through years of genetic engineering (i.e. selective breeding). |

Message | These are both too extreme, but we'll stick with the status quo for now. ---Steven Barley, UPI agriculture advisor |

Message | Yes, but breeding for certain traits is a natural process, and it does make a big difference between tinkering with the genes directly. Your digestion coverts organic matter into energy on a level of efficiency unparalleled by anything humans have devised, for example. Cloning is expensive and doesn't yet work, but natural reproduction almost always works. We don't yet fully understand our own genome, much less those of our crops, and because it's so recently that GM crops have come into widespread use, we don't have any information on long term effects. A lack of information doesn't mean everything's fine. Keep in mind, too, that for years lead manufacturers paid unqualified scientists to conduct completely flawed tests to show lead was safe - they'd hire a botanist to conduct it, for instance, and suppressed what their own scientists found out. Tobacco industry as well - this doesn't need explanation. How can we know for sure this isn't happening with GM food? I'm not against GM food per se, but there's so much we don't about about its effects on us. |
