Bill: A Bill to Allow for the Personal Defense of Citizens

Details

Submitted by[?]: Beluzian Liberty and Freedom Party

Status[?]: passed

Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: August 4048

Description[?]:

In the wake of the horrific terrorist attacks plaguing our nation, and considering our large, rather bloated government structure, it seems that many illegal black-market weapons can easily slip through the many cracks of our nation. Because of this, we believe that it is important to at least allow for men and women to defend themselves, in the absence of a strong governmental defense. In this way, we hope to give the Beluzian people a fighting chance to defend themselves in case these horrific killings happen again.

MessageWe cannot agree to this relaxation of gun control legislation. It's dangerous to assume that firearms won't fall into the hands of the wrong people -- even if we exclude those with a history of violence or mental illness. More guns won't mean a safer Beluzia for our citizens.

MessageBut under the current restrictions, either A) terrorists can still circumvent the system and get the weapons they need, or B) a thriving black market has formed to fill the market need for guns, and the current government structure is incapable of adequately policing this. If we can loosen the restrictions, we can have some control over legal gun ownership, and it may reduce the potential black-market gun sales, meaning less for Beluzia's police forces to spend energy focusing on.

In the wake of terrorist attacks, we need to either dedicate more funding to the defense industry (which we cannot afford to do; we are currently running a deficit as-is, and we can't afford to keep raising taxes), or we need to give citizens a way to fight back against these terrorists.

MessageMaking it easier to purchase guns legally does nothing to solve the problem: a black market will always exist regardless, and the only way we can combat crime and terrorism is by investing in defence and policing accordingly. Beluzia will not be a safer place with more firearms in circulation -- that can surely only be considered a fact.

When we talk about terrorism, crime and firearms in the wake of devastating terrorist attacks, the last thing we should be doing is discussing money. The safety of citizens trumps all else, and expenses should be no exception. This is why it's absolutely crucial we maintain current gun ownership policy and invest in justice and defence.

MessageTo continue the same policies as have been practiced so far is madness, and frankly, irresponsible. There needs to be serious change to the status-quo, as we are (from the looks of it) over-taxing the Beluzian people yet still running a deficit, to remove their fundamental right to defend themselves.

MessageFirst, guns are not banned unlike what you seem to be implying. We still aollow guns and the market for them. Is it relly such a bad thing that it is just as hard to get a gun as it is to get a car? We are against this proposal, since adding more guns will just make things worse.

MessageWe do not believe that guns are flat-out banned, but rather, that they are over-restricted to the point where it is detrimental to the public.

MessageReally, ensuring that owners are responsible by making them obtain a license is detrimental. That's like saying making a driver have a license to ensure they are responsible is detrimental to a person's ability to drive. We feel that having our gun owners responsible is how we can cut down on gun violence, and it is quite frankly, ridiculous to have it be harder to obtain a car than obtaining a car. Loosening gun regulation will make things more dangerous and make the problem you are trying to solve worse.

MessageWe share the BLFP's concerns about terrorism, but we cannot accept that making it easier to own guns is the answer. It is essential to ensure anyone wanting to own a gun is subject to the strictest background checks. Otherwise, we risk unleashing an epidemic of gun crime in our cities.
