Bill: ODEN Withdrawal

Details

Submitted by[?]: Labour Party

Status[?]: defeated

Votes: This bill proposes the withdrawal from a treaty. It will require half of the legislature to vote in favor[?]. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.

Voting deadline: September 4056

Description[?]:

The Kalistani Free People's Movement is calling for the complete withdrawal of the United Republic of Kalistan from the Organisation of Drug Exporting Nations, unless a deal can be proposed which would significantly curb the law-making restrictions which the ODEN enforces on the Kalistani National Assembly. Previous governments foreign relations should not affect the sitting governments policy options.

MessageThe KFPM is doing immeasurable damage to the Kalistan economy. But I suspect they know this, which is why they have forwarded this bill.

MessageThe SPoK would be well advised to focus on fixing their own economic policy before criticizing that of the KFPM. An economic policy which, according to the Kalistan wiki page has led to the following:

"Kalistan, especially Ananto, is subject to rampant unemployment, nearing 10% in some places, and overall some of the worst on Terra."

The Kalistani economy is in crisis and the Socialists refuse to admit it.

MessageOOC: I had noticed, it just helped to reinforce my point. I did update the Premier and President yesterday though, perhaps we could start a bill to clear this up?

MessageOOC. Also, the wiki pages are not reliable with regard to many things. Obviously I have not focused on the Wiki, because editing Wikipedia pages has not been my specialty. But if you are holding THAT against the Dual Economy, I would say that is like judging the prosperity of the US today by looking at our economy in 1610. But I do know that you haven't asked for an objective, OOC appraisal of Kalisyan's society, Political system, historical development or economy from me since you've been here, and more or less dismissed what I have tried to tell you. So I imagine you have less info about the Kalistan economy based on the Wikipedia page than the average American does about their own system.

But that has never stopped people from jumping right in head first anyway and changing things as soon as they get a seat.

MessageOOC. This is typical. It merely reinforces what has been the regular trend in Kalistan
At least you aren't advocating establishment of a police state in a radically libertarian pirate state. But otherwise, this sort of thing follows the normal pattern.

MessageOnly time will tell whether a market economy can work in Kalistan. The SPoK's cynicism is upsetting, we extend our sympathy to them on their fall from grace.

MessageI encourage the house to vote for the motion, this is a cruel trade which is more than a parasite than any economic aid. No offence but this proves the selfishness of the communists. Apparently we're arrogant and selfish for wanting some trade with nations while giving them aid but the socialists are the most cold blooded here and their opposition to this motion proves that they care more about the economy than some people's wellbeing.
I strongly suggest that the government change their minds on this so they can start using real socialism instead of that gross, selfish communist style socialism.

MessageAny change to the drug usage laws or the economic well-being of this country is a threat to individual liberty. This Treaty is the only thing which stands in the way right now of the Right's efforts to eliminate the right to use drugs in Kalistan. This is the FIRST thing the right went after when they reared their heads in this Republic a couple years ago. They signaled that their intention was to limit individual liberty over what citizens used, to increase government oversight on individual choice. They merely backed down because they realized at the time that they didn't have the votes to do it, but clearly they were merely biding their time. The removal of this Cartel and the protections it provides people in Kalistan will be the first step in their long plan to crack down on the liberties of the people of Kalistan with regard to individual choice over intoxicants.

We will oppose it as long as possible, and we are sorry to have worked with them on the things we compromised on.

MessageThe KFPM is issuing a clear guarantee here right now, we will vote against ANY change to drug policy for the next ten years. If this is what is required to convince the SPoK that we oppose the ODEN on economic and democratic grounds, then this is what we will do.

MessageWe ask, then, why is it so important to abolish the Cartel if the end game is to not alter Kalistan's drug policy in any way?

MessageWe believe the treaty needs completely rewriting, with the emphasis on the economic aspect not the controlling of government policy. The Treaty is over 100 years old and only two nations have ratified it, this is not helping the Kalistani economy at all.

MessageWould the People's Movement be willing to outline their proposals for rewriting the Treaty? A revision which leaves the cartel in tact is far more interesting than an outright abrogation.

MessageWould the People's Movement care to express, in the meanwhile what their primary objections to the Treaty as it stands are? We may be able to find some common ground here which would allow us to move off our current opposition to any change in the treaty toward a position of revision instead.

MessageWe believe that it has come too dominant in both Kalistani politics and the Kalistani economy. Our repeated calls that the National Assembly should have the ultimate say in Kalistani affairs is the primary concern, we believe that it is too restrictive of the NA. Now this is not because we oppose the general policies that it lays out but rather it is a matter of principle. We also have some minor objections to the idea that it is the ODEN that regulates drugs manufacturing and not a government body.

MessageThe ODEN regulates manufacture to ensure quality and to ensure that our growers and producers receive a fair price for their product. The goal is to ensure that the open market doesn't turn into a black market.

Let's keep talking though. If the SP can avoid abrogation, this is obviously preferable.

MessageWe are appreciative of the work of the SP to reach an agreement, my Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Trade and Industry Spokesperson and Science, Technology and Communications Spokesperson are on the verge of providing the SP with an alternative Treaty. I will wait until this is complete and move forward from there.
