Message | The NLP issues this statement on the Nov59 income tax proposals: The New Liberal Party wishes to commend Finance Minister Fabian Anderson for this proposal. Though it does not raise quite as much in revenue as one might hope, the NLP observes Minister Anderson has kept the income tax brackets progressive and fair. Also, though we principally disagree with a tax on essential items, we feel a tax of 1% is manageable, and will not have a hugely detrimental impact on Beluzian family budgets - we accept its necessity at the current time. Though the government coalition has declared its opposition already, and this proposal is unlikely to be passed, the NLP will express its support for this Bill, as a step in the right direction. Message | Madam Speaker, I wonder, has the finance minister ever had to rely on a food bank to feed their children? Or had to live pay cheque to pay cheque, not knowing if you'll have enough money to get by this month? This is a typically conservative budget proposal with an excessively high income tax rate of 50% for those earning just 20,000 BEL and 37% for those on low incomes. Meanwhile the most wealthy pay a meagre 55%. We cannot support this budget and strongly urge all members to vote no. No to more poverty, no to homelessness, no to punishing those on the lowest income and no to further rewarding the wealthiest in society. Mike Smith Leader of the Socialist Working Party |
