Bill: Union Reform Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Alorian Communist Party
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: September 2057
Description[?]:
Unions negotiate with bosses on behalf of the workers. These negotiations benefit all workers, including those who are not union members. Now, if you could benefit from the activity of unions without joining them (and therefore without paying union dues), you'd have no good reason to join a union. Thus unions would lose members, therefore lose power, therefore be unable to negotiate on behalf of the workers any more. The things Unions fight for (better conditions, higher pay) are things every worker will benefit from. Therefore, why should people be able to sit back and benefit from union activity without being a member? This is not a question of political freedom - unions are generally not political groups in nature. Unions are groups that protect the worker. However, the workers must also protect the union. Furthermore, with optional membership non-members tend to be rewarded better by the managment and they indirectly condemn union membership. If the government says everyone must be a member then the bosses can no longer practise anti-union favoritism. |

Message | Yes, we have decided that a unionised state will be more beneficial to Aloria at present. Of course we will have no need for unions once there is a truely communist government, but for now we need unions to protect hte common man. |

Message | If there is low membership the union has no power. So, non-members do not benefit. This also means unions don't have to listen to workers because THEY CAN'T LEAVE! |

Message | Yes, that is the problem. Apathy leads to low membership, and thus strips the working man/woman of their power. We must fight worker apathy and corporate intolerance for unions in order to strengthen the bargaining power of the working man. We totally agree with our comrades in the RCL on this one. |

Message | Unions still have to listen to the workers because unions are the workers! And leaving isnt the only way of influencing them. Unions have elected heads, and elections before any form of industrial action. Furthermore, unions dont deal with controversial issues like abortion etc in which there are differences of opinion - they deal with better pay, better conditions and the like. I doubt any worker would disagree with them. |
