Message | Madam Speaker, This proposal would see our health service ripped off by unregulated prices and the pharmaceutical companies being more concerned with making profits than developing life saving drugs. Softwares patents would serve only to create monopolies and though this might suit the privileged 5% of society, will harm business in general. No. Mike Smith Leader of the Socialist Working Party |

Message | Madam Speaker, My party cannot give a position on this Bill at the current time due to internal conflict over Article 1, however I do feel I should address the comments made by Sen. Smith of the SWP. Software patents do not create monopolies, they do not serve any sort of privileged percentage of 'society', and they do not harm business. To claim these things, is to say that copyright laws have trashed literature, destroyed music, and have hung film out (in the sunlight) to dry! Protecting the intellectual property of inventors (and in this case, programmers) in Beluzia is not a cause to be rubbished. I find it troubling that members could speak out in favour of letting industries make money out of stealing others' ideas, perhaps even with no credit, revenue, or thanks given to the original creator. Sen. Keith Tompson Science & Technology Spokesperson, New Liberal Party |
