Message | Madam Speaker, Beluzia is a nation of great minds. Some of the brightest and best world thinkers come from Beluzia. This includes authors, inventors, all sorts of creators - all of them receive protection for their work, so no one else can steal their idea, and with more money, better infrastructure or even just a faster turnaround, making millions off their work without so much as a nod to their part in making it possible. Today I want to give programmers that same protection. This will not only ensure that software creators are justly rewarded for their efforts; it will also stimulate our economic growth, by pushing everyone to come up with new ideas, to push the boundaries and make new things possible. This move will propel Beluzia’s software industry into the future, and turbo-boost our progress in those, and related, fields. This change is good for technology, it’s good for business, and it’s good for the hard working people who make it all happen. So today, let’s bring on the future, let’s give people the recognition they deserve for their work, let’s push ourselves to always strive for new and better progress. Sen. Message | Madam speaker This law is the most prone to abuse I have seen out of this coalition. What is someone patents the software to download things falsely? Now everyone that wants to have the software for file downloading pays up. This also allows for people to easily have a monopoly on any internet service if they patent the right software. If you wish for the entire internet to be controlled by about 5 people then go ahead. |

Message | Madam Speaker, I urge Senators to calm themselves. The ability to patent electronics has not lead to monopolies on certain types of electrical equipment, why should that change for software? This will all be managed by the patent office, and they will review patents, rejecting ones which are too far-reaching, such as the 'software to download things falsely'. Plus, as any student of computer science will know, there is never just one way to solve a problem, no single technology useful to complete an action, no one path to develop down. There are many different ways to complete a task, and allowing programmers to patent the intricacies of new ideas they come up with will simply ensure everyone is constantly push the boundaries, think out new problems and developing new ways of doing things. Rest assured, in the same way no one can trademark the word 'tree' and start charging every Tom, Dick and Harry that uses the word, the patent office will ensure basic technologies are not monopolised. They will ensure patents are used for their intended purpose - giving inventors the credit they deserve. I must stress the case-by-case approach of the patent office's work - they will not allow abuse of the system. I hope this will reassure Senators, so we can all back this very beneficial common-sense policy. Sen. Keith Tompson Science & Technology Spokesperson, New Liberal Party |
