MessageMadam Speaker,

We are sympathetic to the move proposed in Article 2, removing Sales tax on essential items, providing we can be assured by the treasury this will not be replace by over-inflated taxes in other areas (I must admit I will not be holding my breath, Madam Speaker).

I am apalled, however, to see Sales tax on non-essential goods once again increase. The tax is already ridiculous. I urge Senators to think about this tax in the context of the real world - 40% of the price on almost everything you buy isn't actually the price at all, but goes to the government!? It's a rip-off. This tax should be going down, not up, even under the most leftist of governments.

MessageMadam Speaker,

while we must of course support the poorest amongst us, a small sales tax is important for our budget, and while we agree luxury items may be taxed much higher, we believe the current percentage of 35 percent seems adequate for the moment. We do agree on the corporation tax, however I believe there is already another proposal for that on the floor.

Finance Spokesperson, SPA
