| Herr Speaker, We are aware this can be a dicey subject with MPs and the public, but what we are putting forward here today is a way to level the playing field to a certain extent. What will happen is the independent electoral commission will decide on a cap whether it be 5,000 or 6,000, etc. Candidates will receive funding for their campaigns, however if their total donations goes past this cap, the funding is stopped. The proposals aim is to stop candidates being underfunded. We are aware that it will not stop candidates who are well funding and frankly over funded, but at least we have a baseline of funding that helps us achieve a more democratic country. Old value:: Campaigns are never publicly financed.
Current: All candidates receive public funds but are not allowed to accept donations.
Proposed: Candidates receive public funds unless they have raised more than a certain amount of money.
