| Message | My fellow legislators, There have been over 2,000 injuries directly related to accidental weapon discharges, from non-combatants not involved in the war, in our country alone. This is completely unacceptable! We have to do something to address this issue. I understand that the RCP and others are going to dislike this proposed bill, but unless we make sure that those people who are handling these weapons, which are capable of murder, are qualified, we are going to continue having this problem. In fact, since we should start restricting stuff because accidents happen, let's ban hammers because people hit their hands with them. Let's ban ladders because people fall off of them. | Message | "These accidents occur because we are letting untrained personnel handle these weapons. If someone hits themselves with a hammer, they hurt themselves. If someone accidentally shoots someone, they are severely injured or killed. A hammer has multiple uses; I would argue a gun has only one purpose: To kill, or to hurt to a big extent. My party is not trying to ban gun ownership. That would itself be silly, as although guns have only one purpose, they can be a useful deterrent against home invasions or for personal defense. What I am trying to pass, Mr. Bradley, is to make sure only those licensed to operate such firearms are allowed to own them. You wouldn't let someone drive a car without a license: why should guns be any different?" |
