Bill: National Service Act
Details
Submitted by[?]: Conservative Party (보수당)
Status[?]: defeated
Votes: This is an ordinary bill. It requires more yes votes than no votes. This bill will not pass any sooner than the deadline.
Voting deadline: July 4189
Description[?]:
To my colleagues, Our current law is that All adults upon completion of schooling must serve either a term in the military or a lesser paid term of civilian national service, at their option. However, we would like to pose this questions to you. What is the point in forcing everyone who completes school to join a military or civilian service when we are not even at war? If we were at war, this would be acceptable. However their is no point in forcing people to do something they don't want to do when we are at peace. Our proposed bill is that All adults upon completion of schooling can be required in times of war to serve a term in the military. We feel this would be far more fairer as they would be allowed to continue as normal in peace to but understandably help us win in a war effort. |

Message | Dear Speaker, We cannot support this policy as we believe the Military gives a healthy sense of discipline to our nation's citizens which can serve them well in the civilian sector years later..it effectively ties their interests to those of the nation. Voters are less likely to vote for petty wars if they themselves have to fight them, and even better, civilians will be less likely to develop the attitude that our nation's soldiers are their personal slaves to do whatever they command. The current policy also mandates a form of equality(which is your party's chief value) in that All adults have to serve, politicians, businessmen, civilians, soldiers etc. Jung Su-Bin Defence Specialist for National Conservative Party |

Message | Mr Speaker, We are in favour of abolishing national service entirely. It is costly and pointless. We prefer a full professional army, staffed by people who make a career out of it. We wouldn't make average laymen serve as doctors or engineers so why make them serve in another profession? Ri Jong-su PAP Chairman |

Message | Mr Speaker, If we are in war and are army is getting weakened, we will have to either send others out to fight for us or surrender which I don't think anyone would want to do |

Message | Mr Speaker, What is the difference between the proposed law and the current law? In both scenarios there would be a large manpower pool to draw from in cases of war. Additionally, the current law creates some form of equality between all citizens as they have all served their nation in some capacity. The current law also allows those who are opposed to serving in the armed forces for personal or religious reasons to still serve their country in civilian roles. Therefore, I must ask my Republican colleagues to vote no on this bill. Kang Kyong-Su Chairman of the GHD |

Message | Mr speaker, The difference is that currently, we are forcing people to join even in peace time. However, the proposed bill is only making people join in times of war but are free to do what they want in peace time |
