Message | We mildly support the prohibition on fishing. While depletion of fish is a major issue, to have any serious impact, many nations would have to agree to a treaty to have any real impact; however, we would like to make any contributions that we can to halting the slide in fish populations, which will ultimately decimate our fishing industry and our ecology. We are undecided on our stance regarding GM foods. Our greatest issue with GM foods relates to the patenting of life and so called 'terminator genes' which prevent crops from reproducing. Patent fees and difficulty selling our grains to pickier overseas markets have led to a decrease in farmer income. As GM foods are capable of cross-contamination, our organic farmers have taken a terrible hit, and one has even been thrown in jail for willful patent infringement after wind-blown GM soybeans were discovered on his field. He also has pending civil suits from customers for selling contaminated product. Certain genetic modifications, such as pesticide resistance, are likely to cause a massive increase in the use of DDT and other legal but terribly harmful chemicals. Many of our sacred killer whales have had trouble reproducing because of the massive amount of DDT that they concentrate in their bodies. Other modifications, such as having the plants produce human vitamins, appear to be quite beneficial. If patents, or at least patents on lifeforms, were abolished, then would have reservations about article 2; however, we support the bill considering that we are unlikely to get a repeal of patent law soon considering how much money certain industries have been giving to the ruling parties. In short, we support this bill, even if we might have some reservations. |

Message | The Christian Democrats are against this bill entirely. We are generally against government regulation; we are against it double so when it infringes on people as individuals. Let the people fish. Let the people buy what foods they wish. |
