---HISTORY---

~Pre-Game History~
The territory of what is today Hulstria was, in the Middle Ages, ruled by the Empire of Gao-Soto (based on medieval Japan and Imperial China) - and empire that also controlled most of the West of the continent. The Empire was brought to an end by the Holy Luthori Empire (based on England) in the 16th century, who conquered and colonized the territory, although most ordinary settlers were from Dundorf (analogous to Germany). The colonists named the new colonies Hulstria. Eventually, the Dundorfian settlers launched a revolution against Luthori and achieved independence in 1650 as the Empire of Hulstria, a conservative monarchy largely continuing the institutions of the Holy Luthori Empire, and which formed the basis of later iterations of Hulstrian culture.

~In-Game History (up to 4250)~
The Empire of Hulstria collapsed in 2117 starting a decades-long era of chaos and instability known as the Great Dark Period.
Eventually the Hulstrian monarchy was reestablished in 2198, interrupted by brief experiments with republicanism, communism and other ideologies. After which "Greater Hulstria" would rule the nation for nearly a millennium.

A system of apartheid was implemented between Gao-Showans (East Asians) and Hulstrians, and though it was eventually abolished it created much resentment.
This resentment culminated in Gao-Showa nationalism and led to the establishment of a Hulstrian and Gao-Showa binational Dual-Monarchy in 3386.

This was briefly replaced between 3411 and 3416 by the totalitarian North Dovani Union. However, democratic opposition to the Union led to a a peaceful uprising known as the September Revolution. The Dual-Monarchy was re-established, and successfully continued for centuries. This era, defined by a vibrant democratic life and peaceful-coexistence, is known as the Septembrist era.

During this era the cultural distinctions between Hulstrians and Kunihito diminished. It paved the way for the Sekowan house of Yukio-Labsburg. Under the Yukio-Labsburgs the cultural trends of the previous era were publically acknowledged and accelerated through new policies. A "Hulstro-Showan" identity was promoted and Hulstro-Mikun was introduced as the official language in place of "proper" Dundorfian (German).

The nation experienced a long period of republican democracy between 4017 and 4108, during which, for the first time in centuries, the native people became the dominant culture and ethnicity in Mikuni-Hulstria. This was partly as a result of white Hulstrians emigrating to places such as Luthori and Dundorf. Eventually the Yukio-Labsburgs regained their power but after the War for the Emperor's Protection (4152 - 4162) democracy was restored to Mikuni-Hulstria, but the Yukio-Labsburgs retained their throne in a constitutional monarchy system and this remained the situation for 100 years.

~Current Situation 4250 onwards~
By 4250, tensions amongst the two distinct ethnic groups began to spill over again leading to major political upheaval. The discontent was precipitated by the rise to power of the Hulstrian Königliche Partei (Royal Hulstrian Party) led by Heinrich Otto-Mann. Pushing a return to the "glory days of Greater Hulstria", Otto-Mann established a de-facto dictatorship, aggressively promoting Hulstrian culture and installing Dundorfian as the primary language as well as an apartheid system. The royal family was re-named House Labsburg - dropping the Yukio part of the name.

In the 4260s, Otto-Mann, looking to expand dominance beyond Hulstrian borders took the nation into a costly ad fruitless war with northern neighbour Kazulian. It led to Otto-Mann being removed in a military coup and a Military Dictatorship being established. The new regime continued in Otto-Mann's footsteps leading to the emigration of many Gao-Showo ethnics by the time of the 4270 census.

As a result of the turmoil, Hulstrians tend to hold high office/positions of power, accumulate wealth and prestige; while those of Gao-Showa (East Asian) descent figure badly and typically hold down menial jobs and earn less. It is recommended that any RP reflects this situation.

---ETHNIC GROUPS---

Gao-Showa (East Asian) is the name of a meta-ethnicity that includes a wide variety of ethnic and cultural groups, characterised by their use of Gao-Indralan (Sino-Tibetan & East Asian) languages and historical influence from the Empire of Gao-Soto (~ Imperial China & Medieval Japan). Collectively, the Gao-Showans are the largest cultural group in Dovani.

In Hustria the Gao-Showa are represented primarily by the Kunihito (Japanese), often referred to as Gao-Showans and offensively known as "Gishotoi".
The Kunihito remain most prominent in the south and eastern of the country and along the border with Sekowo many still speak pure Kunikata (Japanese).

A sub-group of the Kunihito, now considered a distinct category, is the Gisoten. Colloquially (and offensively) known as "bananas" ("yellow on the outside, white on the inside"), The Gisoten are fully "Hulstrianised" and most have converted to Hosianism. The Gisoten speak Dundorfian (German) or are bilingual with Kunikata (Japanese) and/or Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427) and represent Westernised Asians.

There is also a small number of Sekowans, known as Mikuni-Sekowan. Also known as "North Sekowans" or "Sekowan émigrés", the Mikuni-Sekowans originally hail from the southern Gao-Showan nation of Sekowo. They are based on Ryukyuans / Okinawans in culture and appearance and speak Kunikata (Japanese) and/or Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427).

Hulstro-Showans are a dominant ethnic group in Mikuni-Hulstria, and they are a mixed Hulstrian-Gao-Showa ethnicity.
Colloquially known as "hāfu" or "halfies", Hulstro-Showans are characterized by the blend of the old Hulstrian and Kunihito cultures. They are the source of the Hulstro-Mikun language, which has traditionally been seen as vulgar slang or an inferior dialect. Traditionally proletarian and/or rural, the Hulstro-Showans have gradually come into the mainstream over the centuries. Hulstro-Showans are based on Eurasians (mixed European-Asian ethnic groups) in culture and appearance, and more specifically a mix of Austrians and Japanese, They predominantly speak Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427).

Hulstrians are the politically and economically the dominant ethnic group in the nation. Originating from the Dundorfian-speaking settlers under Luthorian colonial rule, the Hulstrians became the largest ethnicity in the nation and ruled it for millennia.
Hulstrians are sometimes divided into sub-groups based on their social status, such as the Mittel-Hulstrians (the Hulstro-Mikun-speaking generally proletarian/middle class population in the West), Volk-Hulstrians (South African/Rhodesian-style settlers in the former colonies), Luthoro-Hulstrians (aristocratic blue bloods who are descended from the original Luthori colonial elite), and Reich-Hulstrians ("pure" Hulstrians descended from the leaders of the original war of independence).
Hulstrians are based on German-speaking peoples in culture and appearance, but have a more creole-style culture due to their history, and speak Dundorfian (German) and/or Hulstro-Mikun (http://classic.particracy.net/viewbill.php?billid=427427).

There is also a small number of Istapalis (Nahuas), Llaqtas (Quechuas), Welang (Taiwanese Aborigenes) and other ethnic groups originating from Mikuni-Hulstria's former colonies.

---RELIGIONS---

Despite a political push to embrace Hosianism many people are irreligious (including atheists, agnostics, deists, spiritual but not religious.) This is as a result of a long-standing dissatisfaction with traditional religions stemming from the collapse of the institutional structure of Tenshism during the democratic era.

The largest religion, and the one that dominated the nation before the rise of Tenshism, is Hosianism. Hosianism is a religion founded in 1 CE which believes Eliyahu of Yishelem to be the Spirit of God and the Savior of mankind. The largest Hosian denomination in Mikuni-Hulstria, historically and at present, is Confessional Luthoranism, based on High Church Lutheranism, which used to be the state church during the Greater Hulstrian era. The Aurorian Patriarchal Church, Terra's largest Hosian communion, has a numerically small but historically significant presence in Hulstria. Most Hosians in the country are Hulstrians and Gisoten.

Previously a majority of the population adhered to Tenshism, officially the Imperial Evangelical Universal Church of the Orient, and sometimes known as the Imperial Cult.
Tenshism is a syncretic mix of Hosianism, Kamism, and Daenism, characterized by henotheism, worship of Angels (considered identical to the Kami), reincarnation, and belief in the divine origin and authority of the monarch. Although Tenshism lost its dominant position during the 41st century democratic era, it has recently experienced a resurgence. Tenshism is primarily followed by Hulstro-Showans.

Gao-Showan people have traditionally adhered to Kamism (Shinto), Daenism (Buddhism), and Jienism (Confucianism), often practiced in syncretism. Kamism is the name of the collection of native beliefs and mythology of the Kunihito people, devoted to the worship of a multitude of Kami (gods/spirits), considered a part of nature.
Daenism is a religion that was born in Aldegar in the 2nd century CE and which later spread Terra-wide, becoming one of the largest Terran religions. Daenism emphasizes the elimination of attachment, aversion, and ignorance as the way to achieve enlightenment, meaning liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth. Jienism is an ethical and political philosophy founded in Gao-Soto in the 8th century, whose pervasive influence far outweighs the small number of declared Jienists.

MessageThis has been in the draft stage for several game years now without any objections or proposed amendments forthcoming, so it is time to move it to vote.

It is basically an update of the existing CPs but taking into account the ethnic and religious upheavals that have taken place as a result of government policy since the 4250s. Namely, a push towards a dominant Hulstrian ethnicity and Hosianism.

Random fact: It is the collective responsibility of the players in a nation to ensure all currently binding RP laws are clearly outlined in an OOC reference bill in the "Bills under debate" section of the nation page. Confusion should not be created by displaying only some of the current RP laws or displaying RP laws which are no longer current.
