While every person is a link in a community between the past and the present and science agrees that most of her traits are inherited from her predecessors, actual enforcement of these morals can be left to the civil society. It merely seeks to establish the legal institution of civil marriage, which is taken for granted in large parts of the free world. Doing so does not devalue traditional, religious conceptions of marriage in any way - but it does create an alternative that many non-denominational citizens, or indeed those who do not feel ready for entering faith-based matrinony, have been demanding for a long time.
