| Herr Präsident, the near-complete ban on abortion currently in place traps many women - as well as their partners - in situations that cause them severe distress and, in many cases, anxiety about their personal future. A compassionate government must recognize their troubles and respect their freedom to choose a path other than carrying through the pregnancy. I therefore propose to legalize abortion for the duration of the first trimester ("Fristenlösung"), taking into account the legitimate ethical concerns associated with terminating pregnancies at a later stage.
