Description[?]:

Nasennian Law on Abortion

Senators,

Restricting abortion, apart from the immoral effect of subordinating women's bodies to the arbitrary power of others, has one disastrous social effect. It effectively makes abortion difficult for the poor, while the rich suffer no consequences. The rich can easily use their money and influence to evade the existing restrictions and obtain abortions abroad or in international waters, while for the poor this is clearly not possible, and they are thus forced to have unwanted children or to obtain illegal and dangerous abortions. This is very much a social problem, as forced birth greatly decreases women's advancement, reducing their ability to obtain an education and perpetuating poverty. The rich, on the other hand, for all their sexual proclivities, never have to deal with raising unwanted children, with having to divide their wealth and attention for more than one or two offspring, and thus impose a heavy burden on the poor that they themselves to not wish to carry.

We therefore propose to introduce a tiered abortion system that benefits the poor. Under our proposal abortion will be available with no restriction to the lowest income earners, that is those that earn below the lowest tax bracket, while women living below the poverty line will receive subsidies for abortion. Middle income earners will face more restrictions, including limiting abortion to only the first 20 weeks, and no subsidies will be provided. The highest income earners, meaning those women that earn more than the highest tax bracket, will only be able to obtain abortions in extreme circumstances, when the mother's life is at risk. Otherwise they will have to face the consequences of their privileged sexual behavior and bring more children into this world.

We believe that this policy is both just and fair. It is just because it grants working women their due rights. It is fair because, after all the years during which the rich have imposed their reproductive choices on the poor, they will finally get a taste of their own medicine, and see the effects of the policies they wished the poor to obey while they themselves would flaunt them.

MessageThis is disgusting. Baby murder is never acceptable. It will be difficult for anyone to abort babies. Sure there will be cases of corruption, but our worry should not be that it is difficult for the poor to abort, but, rather, we should work on taking care of corruption. Abortions encourage casual, irresponsible sex, and kills babies before they even have a chance to live. Abortion is baby murder. Accept it.

MessageSentators,

Baby murder may be unacceptable, but even more abhorrent is the caste system caused by the perpetuation of poverty that unwanted pregnancies accentuate. If you take any two women of equal socioeconomic status and, all things being equal, the one that becomes an unwilling parent will invariably see a lifelong decline in her financial and economic well-being, while the child is almost guaranteed to become a criminal. We want less crime and less poverty, and allowing access to abortion for the poor while banning it for the rich is one way to achieve that.

MessageTell me, Senator Valens, has the caste system ever killed anyone? Abortion is not the solution to unwanted pregnancies. The solution to unwanted pregnancies is preventing them in the first place. We need to provide birth control pills and condoms to the public and educate the public about abstinence and safe sex. We need to get rid of abortions, except in the most dire of circumstances, so as to promote responsible and safe sex and to save lives. Regarding crime, the solution to the crime problem is not abortion, but creating respectful god fearing children who will abstain from crime, and, in case crime does occur, a healthy increase in the police budget.

MessageSenator Longidium, are you seriously asking whether the caste system has ever killed anyone? Poverty kills. The life expectancy of the rich is significantly higher than that of the poor, and it is widening. By forcing poor women to have children they do not want, we condemn them to a life of poverty and its transmission across generations. It is only when poor women exit their life of poverty, attain an education, and obtain a stable job, that they can more freely and actively behave virtuously. I'm sure Senator Longidium is aware that virtue can't be taught and learned. Virtue is a matter of habit and disposition, and develops naturally when the proper conditions exist. Allowing poor women to improve their social and economic status thus allows them to develop virtue, which in the long run will lead to more responsible personal behavior, including in matters of sex. But that will not happen if they are forced to become unwilling parents.

MessageSenator Valens, people can live with poverty. Poverty doesn't directly kill anyone. Abortion does. It kills unborn babies, and can even be dangerous to the prospective mother. Abortions will encourage irresponsible sexual behavior. The solution to unwanted pregnancies isn't abortions, it's sexual education and birth control/condoms.

MessagePoverty kills the same way smoking kills. Yes, you can "live with" smoking, but hundreds of thousands of smokers would not have died each year if they were not smokers. A similar number of people dies yearly who would not have died if they were not poor or if they had completed highschool. Just because poverty does not kill instantly does not mean it is not deadly.

And it is immoral to place the well-being of unborn children over that of the Republic as a whole. With abortion restricted for poor people many of them will remain poor or become even poorer. Which means they will have lower purchasing power, will be less likely to pursue an education, and more likely to become ill. All of these harm the community and the common good, which is abhorrent.

MessageYou miss my point. Poverty never DIRECTLY killed anyone. Abortion has DIRECTLY killed millions. If you don't want a baby, you should have either been more careful or never had sex.
