MessageSareen Bakhtahaveda, Minister of Defence:

"Comrades, I have seen the face of war. I commanded pilots during the initial intervention in Utembo and have visited with our soldiers on the front as they approached the capital of Medina. I was a soldier, now I am a politician - but I have the perspective of both. The vision of our party and the people of Talmoria is one of peace, one not beholden to the militaristic desires that cost lives both at home and abroad. Working with our comrades, loose as the term may be, in the Progressive Republican Party, we propose a radical divergence from our national defense policy.

If Talmorians are to serve in the military, it should be out of a sincere desire to serve their country - not out of obligation. We will end conscription immediately and focus on a volunteer force. There will be decreases in capability, but on my oath as a soldier, we will defend this country! We must continue our work in eliminating our research in disgusting nuclear weaponry and forever forbit its use. The same is true of land mines that eliminate as many civilians and children as they do soldiers. And finally, we must prohibit our defense manufactories from exporting weapons across the globe. The Talmorian people, who support the defense apparatus with their tax dollars, shall not be complicit in the death of thousands from our weapons exports overseas.

Madame Davidson and I approach this issue from different perspectives, I'm sure, but we will not diverge in the goal. A peaceful, prosperous Talmoria."

MessageYemi Ayafele, Black Bloc candidate for Defense Minister:

Mr. Speaker,

This legislative proposal is outrageous. Of course there is certain good policy to be had in making it that conscription- particularly when we're off fighting massive conflicts- is no longer a tool used to depopulate the honest native-born workers in Talmoria. But there is plenty here that goes too far. Nuclear weapons, landmines, drones... these are tools that our military should be allowed to use to defend this country and her people if the worst were to happen. By dismantling our most powerful and effective weapons we're putting up a sign saying to any comers that they are welcome to invade Talmoria... and here, we'll make it even easier for you! I'm not sure how strong the moral argument of the socialists here will be when we're fighting for our own survival... but I will not be a part of or support this attempt to disarm our country when we need to be doing everything we can to protect ourselves.
